V DERRY WINNERS — PC Seniors Carey Fussell (74), a tackle and fullback Phil Bradner (46) hold the Bronze Derby after defeating New berry 23-21 Thanksgiving Day. It marked the fourth straight year that PC has won the Bronze Derby battle. Fussell and Bradner were never on the losing side in the PC-Newberry game during their collegiate years — (Yarborough Photo) Gault: 'Second' Grid Season Was Successful “I thought our second season was very successful," Pres byterian College Football Coach Cally Gault commented this week after his Blue Hose wound up their schedule with a 23-21 win over Newberry last Thursday. “This has certainly seemed like the shortest season I’ve ever had and it’s been one of the most enjoyable. It was encourag ing to watch the young fellows come around, particularly in the latter part of the season. This was probably the youngest team PC has ever had. It’s unusual to have only 27 upper classmen (six seniors) on a 60-man squad." Gault and his coaching staff had their jobs cut out for them this year. From the end of spring practice to the start of fall prac tice, PC lost eight of the 22 regulars it was counting on for this season. PC brought in one of its largest contingents of fresh men and had to count on many of them. Some of them develop ed qufickly and were instrument al in PC’S'febongrrkifsh. ” “I’m looking forward to next season," Gault said, “I feel we’re over the hump now." After five straight losses at the start of the season, the Blue Hose had an open date. Coach Gault commented then, “We are going to forget the first five games. We are now entering a new season." In the “new season," the Blue Hose fared very well, almost a complete turn-about from the “first” season. PC won five of its last six games, including a for feit from Catawba because of an ineligible player. The win over Newberry gave PC a 5-6 record and 3-2 in the Carolinas Conference. Newberry finished at 4-6 and 1-4 in the conference. PC has defeated Newberry in their last four meet ings. The Hose never trailed New berry last Thursday but the In dians tied the score once and pulled dangerously close later in the game. In the first quarter, PC drove 55 yards to score. Sophomore Tam Milton of Greenwood ground out 34 yards in the drive and fullback Phil Bradner, a senior, scored from four yards out with 7:40 remaining in the quarter. Sandy Cruickshanks added the extra point. In the second quarter, New berry recorded a PC fumble at the Blue Hose 20 and, on the next play, Newberry Quarterback Gary Welchel tagged end Roger Hazel with a scoring pass. The extra point kick tied the score at 7-7 with 3:48 remaining in the half. PC whipped down field where Cruickshank tried a field goal on the last play of the first half but the ball hit the goal post and bounced back into the field. How ever, Newberry was penalized for hhving too tnahy fneh onthe field, and Cruickshank got another shot at the field goal, this time from the 13 and he boomed the 23- yarder through the uprights for a 10-7 halftime lead. MILTON SCORES The Hose upped the margin to 16-7 when Milton scored from the two, capping a 35-yarddrive with 1:39 remaining in the third quar ter. Later in the third quarter, Newberry’s Jim Fulton raced 35 yards on a trick play to pull the Indians to winning two points, 16-14. Instead of going into a huddle, the Newberry linemen lined up to the left of the ball with Fulton taking a side ways throw from the center. PC refused to rattle, however, and methodically ground out an 85-yard drive to what proved to be the winning touchdown. Tight end Bill Caldwell made a leap ing catch of an U-yard pass from Hose Win Opener Play At Wofford Devils On Road In Cage Opener Clinton High School’s basket ball squad will open its season tonight atBelton-Honea Path. The Red Devils will host their first game next Wednesday, Dec. 12, also against Belton-Honea Path. Clinton Coach Jerry Lewis this week announced a starting lineup composed of three seniors lad two juniors. The starters include 5-9 guard John Wayne Jacks, a junior; 6-2 guard Buzzy Tedards, a senior; forwards Alex Rogers, 6-1 sen ior, and Matthew King, 6-2 sen ior; and center Donnie White, a 6-3 junior. Tedards and King were start ers last season and White moved into a starting position before the end of the season. Jacks moves up from last year’s Junior var sity. Rogers didnotplay last year because of a knee injury. Coach Lewis commented, “We’ve shown a lot of desire in our practice sessions. We run a simple offense, aimed at getting the high percentage shots." Reserve strength is expected to come from Tommy Motes, Keith Brannon, Chip Howe, Frank Sherrill, Frank Ivey, Jim Ly- brand, Ricky Ginn, Alvin Donnan, Steve Fennell and Carter Gault Long-lived Fish Herring are among the longest-lived of all species of fishes. NTMc-Dll Quarterback Allen McNeill to score. Caldwell was upended on his way down in the end zone but he held onto the ball for the touchdown. CALDWELL ROMPS A 31-yard pass play from Mc Neill to Caldwell was a big play in the drive. With third down and eight yards to go, McNeill hit Caldwell whf> rambled up the sidelines, knocking over defend ers like a run-away bull. The score came with 6:10 remaining in the game. Newberry, filling the air with desperation passes, scored with three seconds remaining in the game but couldn’t pull even with the Hosemen. The win was a tough one for the Blue Hose. They upset Western Carolina in a tough game on Sat urday prior to taking to the field against Newberry on Thursday. Newberry, meanwhile, had an open date prior to the PC game. Coach Gault commented, “We didn't have any legs out there today. We played just well en ough to win. But then that's what this game’s all about, winning, so I guess we can't complain.” Gault priased Newberry Coach Fred Herron, saying, “Fred had his boys well prepared. He had done a good job all season down there and he did a particularly good job in getting his boys ready for us. I thought we didn’t play real well in Newberry. It was pro bably our worst offensive effort since our fourth ball game. How ever, much of this may be at tributed to the fact that New berry was well prepared and were much better than some peo ple thought. From end-to-end, their defensive line is as tough as any we’ve faced and their pass defense was highly improved.” With the first victory tucked away, Presbyterian College’s basketball team invades Wofford College Friday night to play in the Tip-Off Tournament. PC, which defeated Lander 77- 60 Monday night, will play Wof ford in the second game of the doubleheader. Erskine and New berry clash in the first game which starts at 7:30 in the Wof ford Fieldhouse. PC Coach Herb Robinson said of the win over Lander at PC, “We were glad to get that first one. We were playing a lot of freshmen and we were ragged in spots but I was pleased with our rebounding and our shooting. “We hit over 50 oer cent of our Bell St. Opens With Victories The Bell Street W ildcats open ed the season of 1969-70 with a doubleheader victory over Lin coln High from Taylors. John Bar tone of Spartanburg, a 6-3 junior college transfer, chipped in with 10 points. The Blue Hose held a 10-point lead at halftime. Lander, paced by Jeff May and Ralph Logan, cut the margin to seven points but PC spurted on baskets by Melson and Crowe and were in control during the waning minut es.
