HERBERT SPAUGH Selfishness is one of the worst problems which plague mankind. It is more than a problem - its sin of the worst sort It Is seen in national strife, social con tentions, and in family struggles. I’ve seen it divide many fami lies. A letter is before me from a distressed mother who is con cerned over the struggle of her two sons for the control of the business which their father left them. The older son is having the harder time. Most sociologists, psycho logists, and family counselors agree that the first child usually has the hardest time. The pa rents are stricter with him, ex pect more of him, while the younger son is more often petted and humored. This is true in this situation described in this letter. The mother writes: “The younger son was petted and given almost everything he wanted, even after they were grown. The older son was always ‘wrong’ while excuses were made for the younger one.’ “The heartbreak is that they both are fine young men, easy to be liked and loved, and yet they are both suffering in a dif ferent way because one was given too mu:h and the other not enough." Jesus discussed this subject in the Parable of the Prodigal Son and the Elder Brother. In this parable, the older son was hard working and devoted to the family business, while the younger one, asking for his division of the property, went out and spent it in profligate living. Both sons learned their lesson the hard way. The younger one left home for “the far country* where he spent his inheritance in wild liv ing, Finally, beated to his knees, in repentance he returned to his father who received him with open arms. Then the older brother re belled and complained. In the case of the Prodigal Son, it is quite likely that the younger son was spoiled and al lowed to have his own way. He certainly had it when he demanded his half of the inheritance. In the end, the whole family sadder but wiser is re-united in the home a- gain, sharing and loving. The mother of these two sons who writes this problem has great responsibility, the first of all joining with her husband and fat her in united prayer and in united love. They must pray for their home and their sons. They must demonstrate love which these two sons must learn to have for one another. Only then will the prob lem be settled. A solution of one part chlor inated laundry bleach and ten parts water does a good job of eradicating ink from paper. Keep this in an old iodine bottle with a rubber stopper, and use with a glass rod and blotter just as you do with commercial eradicator. Q. One very good one can be improvised by dissolving a few medical capsules in warm water -- just enough water to make a thick solution. Q. How can I clean a kitchen sink that is well stained by fruits and vegetables? A. Spread a paste composed of equal parts of bicarbonate of soda and chlorinated lime over the stained areas, leave until dry, then wipe off. Another paste tor this same purpose can be made of three parts of cream of tartar to one part of peroxide. Q. How can I impart a little oilness to some of my dustcloths? A. By adding a spoonful of le mon oil or any furniture oil to the rinse water when you wash these cloths. Q. How can I clean wrought iron fixtures? A.
