J. Hewlette Wasson Probate Judge, Laurens County, S. C. ROCK BRIDGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Greenwood Highway 7th August A.C. 1969 A14-6c-S18 Emergendes Reveal Inner Depth BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH An emergency reveals what is down in the subconscious mind. Some one has said that a man has only as much religion as he can command in an emergency. It has been my custom for years in ministering to patients just prior to surgery to give them one test and so impress it upon them that they memorize it and put it down in the subconscious: ‘For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.'(Isaiah 41:13). When this is truly accom plished there is a yeilding of the life to God which brings relaxa tion and makes for much easier surgery and more rapid con valescence. What happens then is illus trated by a story I read of a fa ther and his little boy who were crossing a Philadelphia streel which had car tracks in th* middle. While they were walk ing down the sidewalk, the little boy slipped his hand confidently into that of his father. As they reached the tracks in the center of the street, the little boy, who was looking back at something which they had just passed, tripped violently against the rail. F or the next few seconds he was swinging around rather violently with his feet rather mixed up. The father did not stop, but kept moving to avoid the oncoming traffic. As they reached the safety of the curb on the other side of the street, the little boy looked up to his father and quite out of breath said ‘Daddy, I hanged on all right." The father replied, ‘Yes, you hanged on, but daddy also hanged on to you. ’ I would not have mattered too much whether the little boy had held on or not, the father would have held him up. The little boy did his part back on the side walk when he slipped his hand in to that of his father. If we want the Lord’s help in life’s emergencies, the time to acquire it is in our daily fellowship with Him. That’s the time we should reach up and slip the hand confidently in His hand. Then we will know how to make Isaiah 41:13 a reality. Many times I have written in this column of the need for stor ing away the promises of God in the subconscious. But it must be remembered that we can not claim the promises made for the children of God without becoming a member of the family of God. St John gives the secret of that, ‘As many as received Him (Christ) to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believed on His name; Which were bom, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." Sooner or later you are going to need the Father’s helping hand. You may not need it now. Make Isaiah 41:13 yours now, by es tablishing companionship with your Lord. You will probably have some confessing and some yield ing to do, but the results will far outweigh the cost-here and hereafter. * * * FINAL SETTLEMENT Take notice that on the 23rd day of September, 1969, we will render a final account of our acts and doing as Executrices of the estate of Rosa Bailey Little in the office of the Judge of Probate of Laurens County, at 10 o’clock A.M., and on the same day will apply for a final discharge from our trust as Executrices.
