The shopping center is to be ready for grand opening in August of 1970 and is being developed by Independent Enterprises, Inc. of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The first of two planned de partment stores will be an Ed ward’s store of approximately 50,000 square feet. Edward’s, South Carolina’s largest home- owned variety and junior depart ment store chain, was founded in Charleston in 1936. Today there are 21 Edward’s stores operating throughout the state of South Carolina. The chain has plans to open another five units within the next year in addition to the New berry store. The Edward’s store will be a complete, one-stop family de partment store selling first class merchandise nn a “self-service” basis, Edward’s will offer a well rounded selection of goods and services, including 30 complete departments and an automotive supply department. Also a snack bar will be installed for custo mer convenience at the new New berry store. Edward’s offers a revolving or budget credit plan to its customers. The Newberry ShoppingCenter will be built on the Mrs. W. E. Matthews property of Newtierry. They stated that it was their in tention to make available suffi cient space for specialty shops and service-type businesses to offer an opportunity for area merchants to become a gartof this modern retail complejjk The shopping center is'^emg designed to provide for an en largement of the shopping center at a future date as the Newberry trade area continues its rapid growth and demand for more stores is created. LAWSON Furniture Co Joanna Enterprises officials indicated that in their opinion the shopping center would serve as the “re gional-type” retail complex for both Newberry as well as the en tire Newberry trade area and that its location was ideally situated so as tobeeasily accessible from all sections of Newberry and also convenient to reach from all high ways coming into Newberry from the outlying area. Architects for the Newberry Shopping Center will lie the ar chitectural firm ofCooper, Carry i Associates, Inc. of Atlanta, Ga. This firm also served as archi tects for the Laurens PlazaShop- ping Center in Laurens, S. C., which was developed by Independ ent Enterprises, Inc. and opened in November of 1968. Independent Enterprises, Inc. has developed and is the owner of over 12 major shopping cen ters. In addition, the company has shopping centers now under construction in Dalton, Ga., and Johnson City, Tenn., and is sche duled to begin construction on an air conditioned, enclosed mall in Tupelo, Mississippi, within the next four weeks. The Newberry ShoppingCenter will make available hundreds of job opportunities for residents of Newberry and the general New berry area and will be consider ed a major new industry for the area. Also it will provide oppor tunities for construction work and the sale of building supplies and materials by local and area busi nesses.
