CAMP Extension Home Economist Fresh vegetables not only are packed with good-for-you ingre dients like vitamins and min erals, but they also add color and variety to your meals. Properly cooked vegetables add interest and enjoyment as well as nutrition to a meal. Cooking only long enough to make the vegetable tender tends to pre serve more flavor and better tex ture than prolonged cooking. FOOD BUYING TIPS: Demand Freshness! Check the character- Miss Coleman Wins 4-H Award Eleanor Coleman of Cross Hill was one of the 100 winners at the annual State 4-H convention ■held in Clemson. The awards are based”on >year-loog participation in 4-H activities. Eleanor, a member of the Cross Hill - Mountville Club, won a sewing machine for her achievement in clothing demon stration. Some vegetables are more hardy than others, but bruising and damage can be pre vented by just being careful. The consumer pays for careless ness in the long run. Shop the plentifuls’ The U. S. Department of Agriculture noti fies consumers through news papers and other media when ve getables are in abundant supply across the country. Don’t buy just because of low price! It doesn’t pay to buy more vegetables than you can properly store in your refrigerator, or than you can use without waste. Most fresh vege tables can be stored for two to five days, except for root vege tables which can be stored from one to several weeks. Avoid decay! It’s “Penny fool ish” to buy fresh vegetables af fected by decay. Even if you do trim off the decayed area, rapid deterioration is likely to spread to the salvaged area. A few cents extra for vegetables in good con dition is a good investment. There’s no set rules in buying vegetables because they all have individual characteristics and values. Experience in personal selection is the best teacher. HOW CAN I? BY ANNE ASHLEY Q. How can I soften up a stif fened chamois? A. Rinse the chamois in two quarts of lukewarm water to which a teaspoon of olive oil has been added. If possible, dry it in front of an electric fan. This treatment will make the chamois quite soft and usable again. Q. How can I keep my finger nail polish in prime condition? A. If you keep your nail polish in the refrigerator when you are not using it, it will stay in bet ter condition and can be used to the last drop. Q. What is a good means of making candles burn longer and with less dripping? A. Coat the candles, all but the wick, with soapsuds, and they will last longer and burn with no smoking or dripping. Allow them to dry in their holders before lighting them. Candles will also burn more slowly and without dripping if they have been stored in the refrigerator. Q. What is a quick and easy way to brighten and freshen my rugs? A. Put a little turpentine in a bucket of hot water, dip a broom into this solution, and go over your rug with gentle strokes. This not only brightens your rugs, but is a good moth preventive, too. Q. How can I effect a home cleaning of some of my furs? A. Even white furs can be cleaned by rubbing cornmeal or warm, dry bran carefully into them, after working the clean ser in thoroughly, simply shaking the furs out. Q. How can I get rid of those long-time stains in my bathtub caused by dripping faucets? A. A soap filled steel wool pad used with scouring cleanser usually does the trick. Mild rust stains also may lie removed with a pumice stone. It leaves no scratches. A soft cloth, moist ened with kerosene, is also a good remover of rust from enamel sinks and toilet bowls. Q. How can I make the job of cleaning ashtrays easier? A. To save daily washing of ashtrays, wax them. The ashes won’t cling, odors won’t linger, and disposable tissues will wipe them clean. Q. What can I do with mis- mates of hosiery whose mates have been discarded because of runs? A. Throw all these mismates into boiling water, and they will all turn the same shade. Dear Sally BY SALLY SHAW DEAR SALLY: I married a widower with two married daugh ters two years ago, and we were very happy. However, just seven months ago he died of a heart attack, and I grieved terribly over this, because I loved him dearly. Now here’s my present problem. Two weeks ago a very fine man who attends my church, likewise a widower, asked me to go to dinner with him and to a movie. Being unsure about the propriety of this, I asked our minister and he encouraged me to accept. So I did go out with the man and enjoyed the evening very much. Now my two stepdaughters are incensed over my “extreme disrespect” for the memory of their father, my late husband. What do you have to say about this? IOWA. DEAR IOWA: You had the ap proval of an excellent authority, your minister . . .and further more, I think his advice was fine, and that your stepdaughters are way off-base. DEAR SALLY: Is it proper for a divorcee who is marrying again to publish an announcement of her engagement in the newspaper? R. V. DEAR R.V.: Not usually. Such announcements are more pro perly made verbally to friends and relatives. The exception might be in the unusual news worthiness of one or the other of the two principles or in the case of a very young divorcee, divorced without scandal, re marrying. Then the new engage ment is sometimes announced in the newspaper by the girl’s parents. DEAR SALLY: I’m a young man of 21 and have been dating regu larly with a girl who is beauti ful, witty, charming, and intelli gent. The only big trouble is that she is better than I am , . .at just about everything. She swims rings around me, whips me at golf, trounces me at tennis, bowls a higher game than I do, and is a smarter bridge player than lam. Even though she does all these things graciously and never chortles over any of her tri umphs, it still infuriates me and she has even been compelled to smooth my ruffled feathers and calm me down after some of my defeats at her hands. Do you think that, despite her vast superiority over me in all these things, we can build a good future out of our relationship? JOCKO. DEAR JOCKO: I seriously doubt it. . .for one big reason. You failed to mention something else at which this girl whips you. . .sportsmanship ... the ability to be a good loser. DEAR SALLY: I am a married woman, and every ten days or two weeks I phone my married sister long-distance at her home in another city just to chat with her and find out how she and her family are doing. However, she has the annoying habit of sum moning her four kids to the phone every time I call so that they can say hello to “Auntie.” Some times the kids have to come from some distance away, and often they have much more to say than hello to auntie.. .all of which adds much more to the charges for my phone call. Isn’t there some tact ful way, without hurting my sis ter’s feelings, that I can handle this? AUNTIE.
