Friends will be interested to know Mr. Finney retired in May from the U. S. Marine Corps af ter 27 years of service. Maj. Finney was stationed at Camp LeJune, N. C. at the time of his retirement and is making his home in Newport News, Va. Charlie Force, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Whitsel and Jerry attended the Griffin Reunion on Sunday June 22 in Saluda.' It was held at the Hickory Grove Community Center. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Lollis and family are spending the week at Elijah Park. IN VIETNAM S/Sgt. Virlyn Davenport left Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter in May for a years tour of duty in Vietnam. Mrs. Davenport and children are making their home near her relatives in Hecker, 111. Laura Jane Dixon of Clinton spent a few days last week here with her grandmother, Mrs. Gro ver Adair, and Mr. Adair. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Adair, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Dixon and fami ly of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Shealy of the Bush River section, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Wayne Campbell and family of Augusta, Ga., met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Richardson in Lexi ijt >0 for a dinner, picnic style. Rev. and Mrs. Tommy Brown and children of Lalta visited Mr. and Mrs. Bill Murrah last week end. Tony remained with his grandparents for a week, re turning on Monday. FURR REUNION On June 22 the South Carolina connections of the Furr decen- dants held a reunion at the home of S. T. Moore in Greenwood. As always, they honored Tom Furr, of Joanna who observed a birthday on July 1. Miss Susan Davenport finished her studies at North Greenville Junior College where she major ed in voice and organ. She is spending the summer months with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mau rice Davenport, and is serving as secretary of the First Baptist Church in Joanna. Miss Linda Davenport student at Greenville General Hospital will spend Friday, July 4th, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mau rice Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Evans and Mrs. Cancie Brown spent the day in Greenville, on Saturday. WITH THE SICK Friends will be interested to know Mrs. Lavinia Maw of Green wood, formerly of Joanna is a pa tient at the Self Memorial Hospi tal. Mrs. Linda Turner was admit ted to Bailey Memorial Hospital last week. Preston White Sr. returned home from the local hospital on Sunday. Miss Kathy Miller of Fairview Baptist Church community, near Bonds Cross Roads, is a patient at the Baptist Hospital in Colum bia, due to an automobile accident on Sunday, June 22. HILL Johnny Hill Is Promoted Johnny B. Hill of Route 1, Mountville, has been promoted to PEC E-3 in Korea. The son of Mrs. Dorthy Mae Hill of Route 1, Mountville, lie is an ammunition specialist with the 6th Battalion, 12th Artillery. In a letter to Mrs. Hill, Lt. John G. Townsend wrote, “His resourcefulness, devotion to duty, and desire to excel have contributed greatly to the battery and been valuable aid to both his superiors and subordinates." Jes sie Harvey and Mrs. Harvey. Pfc. David Bagwell spent the weekend with his parents, having completed his basic training with the U. S. Army at Fort Gordon, Ga. He will next go to Fort Polk, La. for a two month mechanical course. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Furman Bagwell. Satterfield. The Sat terfields and the Guerras and Mrs. Robert Satterfield and children enjoyed dinner with the Coates family at the cabin on Lake Greenwood on Sunday of their visit. Pfc. Ronnie Abercrombie, completed his basic training at Fort Gordon, Ga. on Friday and was home for the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Abercrombie. He will be sta tioned at Ft. Jackson and attend Clerical School for two months. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lamb and Sammie of Baltimore, Md. and Miss Ruby Lee Lamb of Cross Anchor were Saturday guests of their sister, Mrs. Jimmy Meeks and Mr. Meeks. Mr. and Mrs. Nathan W'yatt and children and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Campbell spent Sunday in the South Carolina and North Caro lina mountains. Mr. and Mrs. William Stone and family of Anderson spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Trammell. BIRTH GREGORY Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gregory announce the birth of a daughter, Tina Marlene on June 10 at Bai ley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gregory is the former Ruth Holder. McSween Jr. of Clinton and the University of Georgia has received a grant from the Society of Sigma Xi to assist him in his studies. McSween currently is con ducting a study entitled “Pe trological and Geochemical Stu dies in the Coronaca Area of Greenwood County." Dr. Harold C. Cassidy, chair man of the Sigma Xi Grants-In Aid ofResearchCommittee, said, “Sigma Xi each year makes a number of grants to promis ing scientists at critical points in their research careers. We recognize that many needs are relatively too small for the large foundations to consider, yet to the scientist himself the need may be critical.
