C., June 19, 1969—1-C JOHN BAZZLER won daah, broad jump MIKE BLACKWELL won broad jump TERRY ALGINA won sit-ups event Whitten Village Wins Firsts In Special Olympics Seven Whitten Village students won nine first places recently in the Southern Regional Special Olympics held in Columbia. They were among more than 800 participating children from seven southern states in the na tion’s first regional Special Olympics. The Special Olympics was sponsored by the Joseph P. Ken nedy Jr. Foundation; the S. C. Midlands Association for Retard ed Children; the Columbia Jay- cees; and the University of South Carolina Physical Education De partment. Winners from the regional Olympics will be eligible to go to the national Special Olympics to be conducted next year. Winning gold medals for Whit ten Village were: Mike Blackwell in the Broad jump, Judith Miles in the 50- vard dash and 50-vard frsestvls swimming; Jerry Gandy in the broad jump; Dorothy Thompson in the softball throw; Jerry Miles in the bent arm hang; and Terry Algina in sit-ups. Whitten Village had 35 boys and girls participating in these special Olympics. They competed in swimming, track, and field events as well as in physical fit ness and endurance tests. These boys and girls won 31 Olympic medals: 15 gold, eight silver and eight bronze. Dr. Roy B. Suber, Whitten Vil lage superintendent, stated, “We are all very proud of our child ren and the tremendous showing which they made in the Special Olympics. We feel that compe tition is a tremendous aid in the learning or training process. If a child is able to perform com petitively, to improve in the gym or in competitive athletics, he or she will also improve in social adjustment, classroom perform ance, adjustment at home, and eventually on a job in the com- munitv ■ WHITTEN VILLAGE AWARDS—Dr. Roy Suber receives awards which Whitten Village boys and girls won in the Southern Regional Special Olym pics.
