THE EVERYDAY COUNSELOR BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH What is a true marriage? A correspondent asks me to de fine it. Marriage is first of all a civil contract, the terms of which are set forth in the marriage li cense which is issued by the Re gistrar of Deeds or other official in the county where the marriage is performed. As such, the mar riage may t>e performed by a Justice of the Peace or other civil officer authorized to per form such marriages. This is known as a civil ceremony and may be dissolved in the courts upon certain specified grounds recognized by the courts. It is called a divorce. This is purely a civil contract. The marriage ceremony may likewise lie performed by a minister, priest, or rabbi who functions both as an officer of the state and officer of the church. In such cases the contracting parties place them under ecclesiastical laws of the church of which the minister, priest, or rabbi is ordained or licensed to perform such ceremonies. The ceremony may take place in a church or in the home. A divorce authorized by the state is not always recognized by the ecclesiastical laws which bind the minister, priest, or rabbi. In the case of the re ligious ceremony, the minister, priest, or rabbi often quotes the phrase, “What God hath joined to gether let not man put asunder.” Marriage is “a divine or dinance, having been ordained by God in the time of man’s inno- cency, approved by our Lord Jesus Christ, and pronounced by His holy apostle Paul to be ho norable for all,” quoting from the Christian ceremony. A true marriage is a divine institution, wliere the blessing of God is invoked upon the union, and where the contracting parties make their’s a God-centered marriage. Mere words do not make for a true marriage, whet her the ceremony be religious of civil. It is only as two people understand what they are saying and live out the pledge of fide lity that marriage really occurs. In the ceremony whach I have used for more than forty years, the question is asked, “Wilt thou have this man (woman) to tie thy wedded husband (wife), to live together with him (her) after God’s holy ordinance? Wilt thou love, honor, and cherish him (her) and keep thyself wholly unto him (her) as long as ye both shall An affirmative answer tothese questions binds the couple with a solemn promise lie fore God that they will endeavor to live their lives in marriage according to God's will and love. A true marriage, joined to gether by God and lived daily in love by His directum will endure.
