Ivey Jr. of Clinton was awarded the Legion of Merit (First Oak Leaf Clus ter) last week in ceremonies at Presbyterian College. Ivey, who left Saturday for duty in Vietnam, was professor of Military Science at Presby terian College from August, 1966, to May, 1969. A graduate of Presbyterian College, Ivey was honored for “outstanding initiative, imagina tion and leadership” which “re sulted in significant improve ments in the Military Science Program. He delivered informa tive lectures concerning the ROIC effort in general and speci fically the program at Presby terian College. This diligent en deavor brought a better under standing of the ROTC and its merits to civic and academic leader^ and materially enhanced the Army image.” The award was presented by Col. Jones, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, ROTC, for Lt. Gen. Throckmorton, commanding gen eral, Third United States Army. Col. Plowden waa honored recently in a brief ceremony in which she was presented a Certificate of Award from the Department of The Army. She was presented the award for 10 years’ outstanding service and support of the Presbyterian College ROTC program. She is secretary to the ROTC Instructor Group. Mrs. Plowden and her daugh ter, Patti, reside on Pine St.— (Yar borough Photo) Practical Nursing Test To Be Given The preliminary entrance test for practical nursing will be given at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 12, at the Bailey Memorial Hospital. Testing each day is approximately four hours. Applicants must attend both ses sions to complete the series of testings. Tentative plans are for classes to begin in October. Men and wo men between the ages of 17 and approximately 50 may apply if they are American citizens, in good health and have completed the 10th grade or its equivalent. Robert Lake and John D. Long both voted against the state sales tax increase last weekend. This legislature passed a mea sure which increased the sales tax from three to four percent. Sen. Lake twice spoke against the increase and introduced le gislation which would have sub stituted higher taxes on beer, liquor, wine and cigarettes and would have raised the state in come tax. However, his efforts were unsuccessful. Sen. Lake of Whitmire andSen.
