The North Carolina State Magazine quotes the “Bibli cal Recorder.” “A century ago at what is now Washington and I,ee University in Lexington, Va., it had been the custom to give one week’s vaca tion at Christmas; but the newly- elected president reduced this to one day. Typical of that time as well as the present, the first reac tion was talk of boycotting class es during Christmas week.Se cond reaction was an nfficial no tice: “Any student who signs this pledge will lie expelled. If every student signs this, then I will lock the college door and put the key in my pocket.” Signed, Robert E. Lee, President." The American Legion Maga zine uf 1969 gives an account of the great San Franciscn fire and earthquake in 1906. One of the heroes of this tragic experience was Mayor Eugene E. Schmitz. He took control with a display of courage and authority that a- mazed those who knew him, or ganizing an emergency commit tee of prominent citizens. In formed of the water shortage, tie ordered General Frederick Funston, acting commander of the Army’s Pacific Division, to send troops in with dynamite to blow up buildings that were doomed anyway and try to form fire breaks to keep the blaze from spreading. Soldiers were order ed to patrol the streets and the sale of all liquor was forbidden during the crisis. For looting, he had the most drastic answer of all. “The Federal Troops, the memtiers of the Regular Police Force and all Special Police Of ficers have Ijeen authorized by me to kill any and all persons found engaged in looting or in the com mission of any other crime.” Another hero was the Reverend Charles Ramm, rector of St. Mary’s Cathedral. The flames licked at the bell tower of the cathedral. As the gilded cross atop the church caught fire, Fa ther Ramm climbed into the tower. Grabbing an ax, he hacked at the blazing timt)ers. Stubborn ly, he extinguished every burn ing spark and saved the church.
