Watts of 207 Horne Street, Clinton, were recently notified, by the War De partment, that their son, George, was wounded in Vietnam. The notice stated that additional com munications would follow, in forming the family of his con ditio®. The family was happy to learn, by communications from Pfc. George Watts himself, that he has recovered and returned to active duty. He is stationed in V ietnam with the. 198th Lt. Inf. Bde., Co. E. 5/46. Mr. and Mrs. Watts have another son, Jesse F. Jr., Sp-5 who is stationed Hq. & SVC Dep. Ft. Stewart, Ga. MAY DAY USA May Day was celebrated at Midway School on Friday, May 2 at 1 p.m. with well wishers and students as observers. Miss Beulah Adams, a mem ber of the 8th grade class, was crowned Miss May Day, preceed- ing the procession. The pro cession included flower girls, the crowned queen and her escort, John H. Carwise. After the wel come by Arthur L. Fdgerton, each class gave honor to the queen by the presentation of a song or GEORGE WATTS dance, using the theme. Miss E. M. Pitts, Mesdames M. B. Fuller and A. RETURNS TO NEW YORK Mr. George Duncan, son of Mrs. Emma Duncan of West Carolina Avenue, Clinton, re turned to Brooklyn, N.Y. last week after visiting with his mo ther in Clinton. He was grati fied at the growth and improve ments of Clinton since the time of his living in the city; es pecially, was he impressed over the industrial growth of the com munity. CITIZENS IMPROVEMENT Willie Beasley, president of the Laurens County Citizens Im provement Organization, an nounced the monthly meeting of the organization, Tuesday, May 6, 8 p.m. at White Plain Baptist Church in Laurens County. Mr. Vance is an honor student and member of the Jun ior Class at Bell Street High School of Clinton. Mrs. Ella Sa vage is chairman of the spon soring committee. His ship will participate with naval forces from four other na tions in the annual NATO exer cise “Dawn Patrol* through May “Dawn Patrol,’ a large scale but routine exercise, will involve over 60 warships and more than 300 aircraft from five nations in simulated wartime airstrikes and air defense. Amphibious landings by Marine units, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance and nuclear war fare operations are planned. Mrs. Lawrence Jones is in the Spartanburg General Hospital having had surgery last week. Mrs. Carrie Lynch spent the week in Spartanburg with her daughter, Mrs. C. D. Padgett. The sales figures were releas ed preparatory to the company’s annual meeting of stockholders May 27 at its offices in Char lotte. The firm operates 215 ladies apparel shops and family depart ment stores in eight southern states under the name ofCATO’s and WACO’S. The stores here in Clinton are located in Clinton Plaza and at 124 Musgrove St. in downtown Clinton. W. H. Cato, Jr., president, said, “Our plans are firmly based on our continued faith in the South as a growing, dynamic area of the country.” He said that expansion plans this year called for 50 new stores to be in operation by late 1969 in 11 southern states. In addi tion, middle management and su pervisory personnel have been beefed up for continued growth, he said. A young man walked into his father’s general store on Ridge Spring’s Main Street that morn ing and went to work as a clerk. He had just finished his first year as teacher in a one-room school house in another part of the state, and had arrived home to help in the store so his father could get on with the spring planting on the family farm. It was his first experiences in merchandising. He never went back to his teacher’s job. His name was W. H. Cato. “I knew before the end of that first day there was no question about what T wanted to do {he rest of my life,* he said in later years. “Times have changed. We keep merchandising records on elec tronic computers instead of on the back of brown paper bags.
