4 8-A—THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., May 1, 1969 Mrs. Shockley Mrs. Ida Mae Shockley, 56, of RL 1, Clinton widow of Ben jamin Franklin Shockley, died Thursday afternoon at a local hospital. She was a native of Union County but spent most of her life in Laurens County. She was a daughter of the late Joe and Sally Gunn Keasler. She was a former employe of Clinton Mill and Lau rens Mill and was a member of Holly Gove Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. E. L. (Alice) Thompson, Mrs. Frank (Sally) Sherfleld, Mrs. Temp (Jean) Campbell and Mrs. Bobby (Beulah) Avery of Clinton; seven sons, B. Frank Shockley of Laurens and George F. , Walter L., J. W., Joe W., Carroll Bo and Jackie Lee Shock- ley of Clinton; a sister, Mrs. T. G. (Elizabeth) Beaman of Clin ton; 31 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services were con ducted Saturday at Holly Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miss Blakely Miss Iona E. Blakely died ear ly Thursday in a local hospitaL She was a native of Clinton, daughter of the late John Tel ford and Ella Bennett Blakely. She was secretary to the Clin ton Chamber of Commerce and assistant to the guidance direc tor at Presbyterian College be fore retiring. She was a member of the Christian Science Church. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. G. A. (Roslyn) Burton and Mrs. M. L. (Inez) Robertson of Clinton, Mrs. James G. (Eliza beth) Monroe of Latta and Mrs. Harris K. (Catherine) Covington of Richmond, Va.; and a brother, J. Aldine Blakely of Clinton. Graveside services were con ducted Friday at 4 p.m. at Rose- moot Cemetery by the Rev. Al fred L. Bixler. H. D. Tommie MOUNTVILLE - H. D. Tom mie died late Sunday night in a Clinton hospital. He was a native of Alabama, and lived in MountviUe 36 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Tommie. He was a retired track foreman for Sea board Railroad and a member of MountviUe Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. MyrUe H. Tommie; a son, W. Joe Tommie of Greenwood; a sis ter, Mrs. Elmer Moses of Ohat- cbee, Ala.; and four grandchild ren. Funeral services were con ducted Wednesday at MountviUe Presbyterian Church by the Rev. David Staley. Burial was in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Barney Bell, Jr GREENWOOD - BarneyB.BeU Jt., infant son of Barney and Betty Sparks Bell of Pope AFB, N.C., died Thursday in an Air Force hospital. He was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. George Holder of Clinton. Other surviviors include a bro ther and maternal grandparents. Graveside services were con ducted Saturday at Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Hodges. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Old Hepzlbah Baptist Church with burial in Dodd Cemetery near Seneca. Mrs. Witherspoon COLUMBU - Fineral ser vices were conducted Thursday for Mrs. Anabel Darby Wither spoon, widow of James Harvey Witherspoon. Services were conducted in the First Presbyterian Church Chapel with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Witherspoon, 85, died Tuesday, April 22, in Providence Hospital. She and her husband were for merly of Clinton when Mr. With erspoon was superintendent of schools. I. L DeYoung GREER - Jesse L. DeYoung, 83, of Route 1, Greer, died Fri day night at a Greer hospitaL He was a brother of J. M. De Young of Clinton. Other survivors include his wife, two daughters, eight sons, si* other brothers, a sister, two half-sisters, 3 half-brothers, 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Sharon Metho dist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Head Start Director Is Announced The Laurens County Communi ty Action, Inc. has been funded to administer the 1969 Summer Head Start Program for Laurens County. In the upper part of the coun ty, the location will be at the Laurens Grammar School on the Greenville Road. For the lower part of the county, the Mercer Silas Bailey Sehool in Clinton wlU house the program for the third year. All eligible children are urged to attend. They will receive pre school training, medical and den tal examinations and treatment and well balanced meals. Jack P. Holmes, principal of the Laurens Grammar School, will be director of the project this year, assisted by Isaac White of Laurens and Mrs. Sarah C. Byars of Mercer Silas Bailey School who will serve as head teachers in the respective areas. A full staff for the program will be secured within the next two weeks. Pre-enrollment of the children will beginearly this year. In Clin ton, this will be held in the new Clinton Center located in the old Putnam House on Florida Street, across the street from the Com munity Cash Supermarket .In Laurens pre-enrollment will be conducted at the offices of the Child Development program in the Swafford Building on the Square. Clinton PTA The Clinton Elementary PTA will have its last meeting of the year on Tuesday, May 6 at 8 p.m. in the cafetorium. The ele mentary school teachers will be honored at this time and there will be refreshments as well as en tertainment by a group from Presbyterian College. Mrs. Gullott LAURENS - Mrs. Belle Gullatt, 46, of Route 2, Laurens, Bell- view community, died Friday morning. She was a daughter of John Tucker of Clinton. Other surviviors include her mother, three daughters and se ven grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Bellview Bap tist Church with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. L H. Johnson SENECA - Louis Henry John son, 68, of Route 2, Seneca, died Friday at the home of a daugh ter. He was the father of Miss Willie Ruth Johnson of Clinton. „ Ohter surviviors include three koa, three otter daughters, two sisters and 11 grandchildren. KASTORY Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kastory of Winter Park, Florida announce the birth of a daughter, Kirsten Lee, born April 23.
