Hursh, M.D. Consultant, National Dairy Council A FARMER’S ADVICE About a year ago, I was perus ing a newspaper and ran across a letter to the editor of a Wiscon sin newspaper. The letter not only intrigued me for its interest ing writing style. Its subject mat ter also seemed to offer a great deal of common sense. The points are made in the letter in simpli fied language, but as a generalized statement I can fiAd nothing in it to seriously criticize and much to recomhiend it to you. So here is the letter: “Dear Editor: “Looking around for something to take the place of a daily, dreary vitamin pill, I discovered a liquid product that has all the known indispensables for good health, plus a few extras. “After making sure it had the regular A, B, C, D, and E vita mins, I checked out the other fairly well-known ones: riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid and folic acid (all in the so- called vitamin B complex). It had them all. “Then, I turned to the minerals. I found this drink had every sin gle mineral known to be neces sary to the human body! These include phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, chloride, calcium, sodium, and iron. "I found that we need 19 minerals. This drink had them all and 10 more besides. “Then it struck me! The pill peddlers have been pushing a protein pill lately. Could it be . . . ? I found 10 different pro teins (amino acids) we need for good health. This drink had them all plus another eight. “Just to be sure, I called a doc tor and asked him his opinion of the product. He told me, Tt fa vors growth and development in youth, confers health and vigor throughout life and postpones old age.’ “I tried a dietitian and he praised it. I got similar answers from a dentist, nurse, beauty ex pert, and a food editor. “They all agreed it was the most convenient, pleasant and ef fective way to fill the nutritional gaps of ordinary diets and to pro mote growth, health and energy “This stuff must cost plenty, I thought Would you believe it? The price in my area is about 90 cents a gallon. “They call it milk. A Farmer” Applied Research Is Industry’s Responsibility, DuBridge Says In all areas of government interest—space, defense, atomic energy, transportation, standards, etc.—industrial research and development are the nation’s prime technological resources, L. A. DuBridge, special assistant to President Richard M. Nixon for Science and Technology, said in a letter to Melvin A. Zurn, chairman, Science/Technology Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers.
