He has been this way throughout our en tire four years of marriage. I’ve made any number of attempts at these times to cheer him up, but without success. Maybe if I could understand the reason for his early-morning distemper, I could do something about it. Any comments? CINDY. DEAR CINDY: Evidently your husband is like many other peo ple who just cannot begin func- tioning on all eight cylinders for quite some time after arising. Best to leave him strictly alone at these times, since quite often any attempts at cheering up this type of person have adverse ef fects. Just be thankful that in reality your husband is “one of the nicest, sweetest, kindest persons you would ever want to meet.’ DEAR SALLY: Our 25-year- old son has recently been dat ing a certain attractive young woman in our community who was divorced only a month ago. We think it’s definitely out of line for any man to be going around with a woman so soon after her divorce from another man. It isn’t that we’re prudish, but we still think that right is right. What are your views on this? ETHICS. DEAR ETHICS: I fail to see your point. The minute a woman receives her final decree of di vorce she is no longer a mar ried woman. . .and, therefore, your son cannot possibly be “out of line” dating an unmarried wo man. Is there anything else I can do? L. P. DEAR L. P.: One thing you might do. Tell him what his brushwork is doing to your skin, and postively there will lie no more kisses from you until he shaves. Then I do hope for your sake that he will prove to you that he sets a higher value on your kisses than on his spinach patch. DEAR SALLY: You have writ ten unfavorably in the past re garding a girl’s sitting for any length of time in her boyfriend’s car parked in front of her home after their return from a date. But this still seems preferable in my case. I have five younger brothers and sisters milling about the house, and a mother and fattier who are late TV watchers . . .all of which would make any privacy for my buy friend and me impossible. Andby “privacy,” I mean just the opportunity for good, quiet, proper conversation . . .honest! TEENER. DEAR TEENER: Even un der these circumstances, I can not recommend parking alone with a boy on a dark street. Named Planning Agency GREENWOOD- The Upper Sa vannah Development District headquartered here has been de signated as the official planning and development agency for six area counties. Governor Robert E. McNair met with members of the legis lative delegations of the six coun ties involved to discuss this new planning concept. The delegation memliers signed an agreement authorizing the district office to administer state and federal planning for the counties of Abbe ville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick andSaluda. Dan B. Mackey II, executive director of Upper Savannah Development District said the a- greement gives legal recognition to the district in accordance with Act No. 487 of the regular ses sion of th 1967 South Carolina general assembly. Asa govern mental entity the district can now accept funds for planning from the Federal, State and Local gov ernments. Mackey said that the district will be eligible to participate in all federal programs that require regional comprehensive plan ning. The U.S. Departments of Justice, Health, Education and Welfare, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies are requiring local plans to be a part of re gional planning. The decision to participate in the various planning and develop ment programs will be made by the governing bodies of the re spective counties. The costs of local matching funds for the coun ties will be determined by the various agencies and their for mulas for grants and loans. Using the resourses of the district office the coun ties can be advised and assist ed in their effortj to meet cur rent needs and plan for future developments. The District will coordinate its planning activities in the six counties with the Governors Planning and Grants Division which is responsible for similar activities on the state level. HOW CAN I? BY ANNE ASHLEY Q. What is an easy and ef ficient way of burning initials, monograms, and other intricate designs into wood? A. Simply paint on the design you want with a fine brush, us ing ordinary fingernail polish. Then light one end of the polish with a match, and the flame will neatly follow the design, char ring the wood along the painted path. Q. How can I prevent wash able garments from creasing so easily later? A. Be sure not to dampen the clothes so much that it is diffi cult to iron them absolutely dry. Clothes that are not ironed com pletely dry tend to crease and wrinkle easily after just one wearing. Q. How can I renovate a stif fened chamois? A. By soaking it in warm wa ter to which a spoonful or so of olive oil has been added. Q. Is there anything I can do about squeaking shoes? A. Try standing your noisy shoes overnight in a strong salt water solution, shallow enough to cover just the soles of the shoes. And if you want to preserve the shape of your shoes during this treatment, better use shoe trees. Q. What is a good way to warm up leftover meats? A. Place them in a pressure cooker, add three tablespoons of water, let the steam build up to the starting point, then remove from the fire, and let the pres sure go down. Q. What can I do about grease stains on suede jackets, bags, hats, shoes, and the like? A. Try sponging them with vinegar. Then, when dry, restore the nap by brushing with a stiff- bristled brush. Q. What is a good formula for a whitewash for interior walls? A. Mix one pound of powder ed glue with one gallon of water. Then mix 20 pounds of hydrated lime with two gallons of water, stirring carefully until all lumps are dissolved. Combine these two mixtures, and stir until smooth. Finally, thin with water to a suit able consistency. Q. How can I make the wash ing of very greasy dishes much easier? A. By squeezing lemon juice in to your hot water before begin ning your chore. Many other such shortcuts and hints are contained in my new household manual. Q. How can I remove paraf fin easily from a container in which it has been melted for can ning? A. Fill the container with boil ing water, then allow this to cool. The paraffin will float to the sur face of the water.
