C., February 6, 1969 Fashions For The Table BY HELEN CAMP Extension Home Economist Labels and Laundering: Table linens are available in such a variety of fibers and blands that it is essential that the label or hang tag attached to each cloth or mat be kept for later laun dering reference. SAVORY GREEN BEANS 1 pound fresh green beans 2 tablespoons olive or salad oil 1 clove fresh garlic Vi cup diced fresh green pepper 1 table lilespoon fresh chopped onion 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon basil leaves teaspoon sugar Grated Parmesan cheese Remove tips from beans and cut into 1-inch pieces. Set aside. Heat oil in sauce pan. Peel garlic, cut in half and cook in hot oil until golden. Remove and dis card garlic. Add green pepper and onion. Cook slowly 3 minutes or until E eppers and onions are mp. Add beans, salt, basil, sugar and V 4 -cup boiling water. Cover and cook slowly 15 minutes or until beans are crisp-tender. Serve hot topped with Parmesan cheese. Six portions. The aris tocrat of the table, pure Irish linen, must be ironed while very damp to retain its like-new ap pearance. Stains should be treated as soon as the meal is over for best results in their removal. An ex ample is a blood stain which will permanently mar the beauty of table linens unless it is soaked in cold water before laundering and while still fresh. Fruit juice, coffee and tea stains respond to boiling water when the cloth is stretched tight ly over a bowl and the water poured through the fabric from a height. Lipstick is the most common offender on napkins. A bit of oil or one- of the liquid detergents, when applied full strength and rubbed in with a finger, will make short work of this stain. Table linens deserve the same careful storage you give your clothing. Keep them away from excessive heat and dampness. And never store freshly launder ed table linens until they are thoroughly dry, or mildew, one of the most difficult stains to remove, may develop. Table linens are the basic dress of dining fashions - avail able in fabrics that include many different fibers. The term “table linen* usually refers to any cov ering (in a wide variety of sixes) including place mats and nap kins. Since a well dressed table likes variety in its wardrobe, the purchase of a number of table coverings is a practical invest ment. Fitting Fashions for the Ta ble - Table linens, like wearing apparel, come in an assortment of sizes. If your table is to be fashionably dressed it must be covered with a cloth that fits properly. When shopping for ta ble linens, take along the mea surements of your table with a listing of its width and length, both with and without extra leaves. Remember this easy buy ing rule: Allow 5 to 10 inches of overhang for smaU tables.. , 10 to 15 inches of overhang for larger tables. Place mats may be purchased in contour shapes, perfect for a round table, as well as in familiar rectangular, oval and round shapes. When setting the table with mats, space them far enough apart to let the beauty of the table’s surface become part of the overall decorative ef fect Accents With Accessories - Accessories can express excite ment and personality in your din ing decor. Tableware and linens can be combined for effect but they must be coordinated with accessories to gain a sense of style that stamps the setting as undeniably you. Where do you look for ac cessories? Begin in the garden with a single perfect rose or gather a bouquet Arrange them in a container which expressed the mood of a meal. A glass bowl, for instance, is perfect ly at home with Classic or Con temporary, and pottery puts flow ers in a Country setting. Candles can be used to ac cessorize an evening meal with\ elegance. Choose tall tapers for a formal dinner. Squat colorful candles in rustic containers are fun for a meal, with a Country feel while vigil candles at each place can provide an exciting in novation in Contemporary dining.
