Carl Fincannon Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Edmund Smith announce the engagement of their daughter, Fay Foy Smith, to Julius Carl Fmcannon, son of Mrs. A. J. Lanier of Clinton, and Mr. Fred Fincannon of Greenville. The bride-elect is the grand daughter of Inman Murphy Foy and the late Mrs. Foy ofStates- boro and the late Mr. and Mrs. Jessamine Club The Yellow Jessamine Garden Club met Monday, January 27th, at 3:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. William Johnson. Mrs. Hender son Pitts was co-hostess. After a business session, Mrs. Pitts introduced Mrs. George W. Copeland who reviewed the book “Voiceless Lips’ by Mrs. Nell Warren Outlaw. At the conclusion of the pro gram delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses. Benjamin Edmund Smith of Por tal Miss Smith is a graduate of Statesboro High School. She is presently attending Brenau Col lege and is a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority of which she is corresponding secretary. The groom elect is the grand son of Mr. Julius W. Merck and the late Mrs. Merck of Central, South Carolina and Mrs. Thomas Alton Fincannon and the late Mr. F incannon of Liberty. Mr. F incannon is a graduate of Clinton High School, Spartanburg Junior College and Georgia Southern College where he is a member of Kappa Alpha Order. The wedding will be March first in the Statesboro United First Methodist Church. No invitations will be sent but friends and relatives are invited to attend. Legion Ladies Have Program On Americanism The American Legion Auxi liary met at the home of Mrs. H. J. Pitts on Tuesday evening. Mrs. H. M. Young, president, presided. The meeting opened with prayer by the chaplain, Miss Essie Davidson. The pledge to the flag was led by R. Pope Chap man. Mrs. Young led the group in reciting the preamble. Mrs. R. Pope Chapman, Americanism chairman arranged the program. How the youth can help their country by taking ad vantage of the educational op portunities available was vivid ly pointed out in the film “When I Am Old Enough To Know’. Also by color film the group saw the National Convention of the American Legion held in Dallas, Texas complete with business sessions and entertainment in cluding some of the addresses given by the National leaders. R. S. Truluck presented the films for Mrs. Chapman. Mrs. Chapman had as her spe cial guest, Miss KjersminSmeds, of Finland who will return home next month after spending a year in the United States where she has worked in her line of study as a designer in textiles. Mrs. Young presided over the business session and closed the meeting with the poem, “Plant A Garden’. Assistant hostesses were Mrs. Ralph Patterson, Mrs. Linda Wil liams, Mrs. Joe McGee and Miss Florrie Burdette. * * * Garden Club Views Slides Slides of birds were shown by Mrs. Allan Young, when the Iris Garden Club met January 22 at the home of Mrs. John Mabry. Mr. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stinnett Gives Program The Carolina Wren Garden Club held its regular meeting with Mrs. Platt Prather on S. Adair St with Mrs. Irene Pitts as co-hostess. The meeting was called to order by its presi dent, Mrs. Joel Cox, and fol lowed with a devotional by Mrs. Irene Tankersley. After a brief business session, Mrs. Clarence Stinnett presented an interest ing and informative lecture on "table technique” which includ ed the use of linens, silver, china and crystal. Four separate table settings with floral ar rangements were displayed showing the use of color in the dining room of the home. A com plete table was set informally showing the beauty of red and white with a Valentine motif. Delicious refreshments with coffee and tea were served by the hostess. B&PW Conference Highlights of the B & PW Educational Conference heldJan. 24 and 25 in Columbia, at the University of South Carolina was the news that the South Carolina B & PW Federation was the first to equalize members in the Per mitted to keep the lectern which they won last year. If they equalize first next year, they can permanently retain the traveling lectern. “Woman of the Year” of the various state clubs were honored at the meeting. Mrs. Grace Con nor, Clinton’s winner was pre sented. Accompanying her were Mrs. M. C. Poole, chapter presi dent. Mrs. L. S. Lockett and Mrs. W. W. Harris of the local club.
