DAH ECKSTElt UJ-Americaa
Almost foar years a^o, a Pres

saw Dan Eckstem trot off a high
school baseball field in time to
participate in a track meet.
Although Eckstem was only a
Jwiior in high school in Atlanta,
Ga,, the coach, Jimmy Vickers,
saw that he was potentially an
oatstanding athlete.
Visits to the P.C. campus fol
lowed and Eckstein like what be
saw. He turned down a foot
ball scholarship to Wheaton Col-
te** in Chicago, 111., and a track
•cbolarship to Georgia Tech to
attend P.C. Today, he’s P.C.’s
first Small College All-Ameri

Eckstein was named to the
Associated Press’ Small College
All-American first team as a

Head Coach Cally Gault com
mented, ‘Dan is not only a player
who has produced for four years
for us, he has been consistently
good in practices as well as in
games. It’s not a question of be
ing brilliant in one game and ot

great I don’t know of anyone in
the history of P.C. who has
clocked more playing time than
Dan.

in having capable, loyal people

burg’s 4A state championship

the fading seconds to preserve
the Blue Hose win over the
Terriers.
Yarborough was named to the
All-Tournament team, alongwith
Newberry’s John Smith, Charles
Kllroy and Mike Jenkins and Er-
sklne’s Bill Yates.
Presbyterian College placed
four players on the All-NAIA Dis
trict 6 football squad, including
one unanimous selection.
Dan Eckstein, PC’s offensive
and defensive star, was^a unan-
imous selection as a defensive
back. The only other unanimous
pick was Appalachian State eno
Bob Agle.
Other PC players named to the
24-man all-star squad are Cap
tain Charlie Reid, a tackle, on
the offensive team; Shell Dula,
defensive tackle; and Bob Hackle,
Ime backer.
All four P.C. players are
seniors. Eckstein is a 178-pound
er from Atlanta, Ga. while Reid
(210) is from Greenville. Dula
is a 230-pounder from Laurens
and Hackle, who weighs 205
pounds, is from Winnsboro.

Consistency was the key to
Presbyterian College’s 74 re
cord and a share of the Caro
linas Conference football champ
ionship, according to HeadCoaeb
Cally Gault.
The Blue Hose completed their
season last Thursday by bomb
ing Newberry 42-7 in the tra
ditional ThanksgivingDayBronse
Derby battle.
The conference win left PC
with a 5-1 conference mark, the
same as Lenoir Rhyne with whoa
the Hose share the league champ
ionship.
Coach Gault said, “We were
always optimistic about this sea
son, sometimes maybe we were
too optimistic, but we felt all
along that we’d have a pretty good
season.
“We had thought that last yeai
would be our year but we had
so many injuries."
“This year, we consistently
played good football. We were
a little slack on offense at the
start of the season but we played
consistently overall. The boys
had a good attitude in practice.
They didn’t go to extremes. We
opened with a win and then had
two losses but we didn’t pan
ic. We came back with good games
against good teams, Wofford and
Elon.”
“Our only bad game was a-
gainst Appalachian, a very good
team. The cold, wet weather
seemed to have an adverse af
fect on us although it didn’t
bother Appalachian.”
“Three of our four losses
were to teams ranked in the top
22 among the nation’s small col
leges. I still think we deserved
to win the Furman game but that
doesn’t change anything.”
“We will lose some fine sen
iors (13) this year but we try
to prepare for that. Our big
question now is how many non-
seniors we’ll lose between now
and next season because of acade
mics, service or lack of money.”
Against Newberry, P.C. rolled
up a 28-0 halftime edge and in
general dominated the game.

On Saturday night against Wof-
Presbyterian College’s bas
ketball team opened a tough
three-game set this week with a
78-51 win over Western Caro
lina.
The Blue Hose played host to
Catawba Wednesday night and Is
at Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, N.C.,
tonight, Thursday.
PC Coach Herb Robinson called
this week’s PC schedule, “the
toughest small college schedule
in the nation. Hitting Western
Carolina, Catawba and Lenoir
Rhyne in the same week is tough,”
he said.
A 15-point spurt opening the
second half paced PC over West
ern Carolina. Danny Yarborough
led the spree with eight points,
mostly on driving layups.
At halftime, PC was leading 24-
22 but the Hose quickly widened
the gap in the second half.
Yarborough finished the night
with 26 points. Chuck Baker,
a sophomore from Kershaw, con
tributed 14 points.
Next week, the Blue Hose have
two games scheduled. They play
at Belmont Abbey in Belmont,
N.C., on Tuesday and will be at
home to Pfeiffer on Thursday,
Dec, 12.
