James Ernest Mer chant, former pastor of Broad Street Methodist Church in Clin ton, died Sunday afternoon at his home at 6 Westminister Drive, Greenville. He was 72 years old. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday at Buncombe Street Methodist Church with bu rial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lautrelle Gatlin Merchant; a son, the Rev. James A. Mer chant, pastor of St. Paul Metho dist Church in Orangeburg; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Scogins Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 14, for Mrs. Mary Bell Kincaid Scogins who died Tuesday in Colbert, Ga. Ser vices were held at Colbert Metho dist Church with burial in the Colbert cemetery. She was the mother of W. T. Scogins of Clinton. Other sur vivors include two other sons and a daughter. J. J. Bailey TORRCO MAKES S A L E S — The Torrco Junior Achievement Corpora tion, sponsored by The Torrington Co., made its first sales this week to Richard V. Bodmer, plant manager of the sponsoring company, and Clinton Mayor Harry Layton. The company produces Christmas candles, which it sells for $1.25 each, and Christmas bows, at $1 per package. Bodmer presented the Junior Achievement Corporation with its charter Monday night. Jemme Bailey, 80, of Route 2, Clinton, who died last Thursday. Services were conducted at the Clinton Church of God with burial in Calvary Cemetery. A native of Maidson County, N.C., he lived in Laurens County since 1905. He was a retired farmer and textile employe. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lena Hagan Bailey; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Irene) Williams of Laurens, Mrs. Car- son (Marjorie) Ervin and Mrs. Jim (Bettie) Sulphin of Detroit, Mich.; four sons, Dewey B. Bai ley of Laurens, J. R. Bailey of Gray Court, K. G. Bailey of Chesterfield, Ind., and William J. Bailey of Clinton; a sister, Mrs. Willard (Lizzie) Sellers of Laurens; 31 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. PRUNING MAY COST - Ac cording to some of the research people early pruning of peaches may remove carbohydrates. Pruning early in the fall removes the stored material and the tree is in a weakened condition for the winter. She was educated at Chicora College and Presbyterian College and taught school in Georgia andSouth Caro lina for many years. She was the widow of Cleon W. Stuckey. Mrs. Stuckey was the sister of Mrs. C. P. Robinson of Silver Springs, Md., and formerly of CTinLn and was tho aunt of Mrs. L. S. Lockett of Clinton. Other survivors include five daughters, two sons and another sister. Funeral services were con ducted Saturday in Indiantown Presbyterian Church.
