His team hosts Elon Saturday night and Gault warns that this is no time for a let down. He said, “Elon lost to Appala chian last Saturday 70-27 but don’t think that Elon is a weak ling. The score doesn’t indicate comparative strenghts. “Elon has a physically strong team and they had won two games going into the Appalachian game. Elpn fumbled the first two kick offs in that cold Appalachian wea ther, Appalachian recovered both and took them in to score. Appa lachian was ahead 14-0 with less than three minutes gone in the game. Elon still came back to tie the score but Appalachian Is probably the best team we’ll play and they moved on out We had difficulty moving the ball and we have a lot of work to do on our offense. I feel we need to be able to throw more for the long strike. We hit one against Lenoir Rhyne and hit another against Wofford but we need more long strikes. ■Ronnie Jordan did a fine job defensively, particularly on our goal line stands. Also, Builis’ punting helped us to get out of some holes. One time he boomed one 65 yards in the air and took some of the pressure off our defensive unit.” RONNIE JORDAN •Elon is a powerful team and runs the single wing. They pass well, with the passing attack cen tered around 6-5, 220-pound end Riahard McGeorge. We re member him well. He caught a pass at the last of the game IftGlt year to beat us 21-20. He’s probably the best end in the conference. They also have quar terback Burgfn Beale, 6-2, 195, retorning along with fullback E m- orjf Moore, 6-1, 210. They were hard for us to stop last year. In feet, they only lost three boys from last year’s team. Elon is probably the largest team we’ll play, Including the Quantlco Ma rines." Concerning Saturday night’s win over Wofford, Gault said, “We had a tremendous defensive effort in tough situations. The whole defensive team did a tremendous job with their backs to the wall. C„ Oct. 10, 1068 PC Defense Paces Victory BY MIKE SIMONS The Presbyterian College de fense, coming through when the chips were down, led the Blue Hose to a 10-0 victory over arch- rival Wofford inSpartanburgSat- urday night. The defense set up the PC touchdown when Ed Pauliing re covered a Wofford fumble on the Blue Hose 42 yard line. Allen McNeill hit Bob Hackle for 45 yards, then hit Francis Cooper for an 11 yard scoring strike with 4:50 left in the half. Sandy Cruickshanks added the PAT to make it 7-0. Cruickshanks kicked a 34 yard field goal with 0:49 left in the game to give the Hose their 10-0 margin. Cruickshanks moved into a tie for first place in PC scor ing with 12 points, coming on 3 of 3 extra point attempts and on three field goals. The Terriers drove to the Blue Hose one yard line in the second quarter, but on fourth down the Terriers Ted Phelps was met head on by end Johnny Bankhead to stop this drive. The PC defense intercepted five Wofford passes, with Dan Eckstein and Bob Hackle each getting two, and Roland Mc Laughlin picking off one. PC lost three fumbles and Wofford lost two. After the game, Head coach Cally Gault couldn’t say enough about the play of middle guard- linebacker Ed Paulllng. Paulling was in on the incredible total of 42 tackles, with 36 assists and six individual stops. Paull ing recovered one fumble and caused another by his vicious tackling. He also knocked down two passes and on Wofford’s last series of downs, he threw the Terrier quarterback for succes sive losses of seven and 10 losses. Next week the Hose host Elon in the annual Youth Night game. Elon was humiliated this week by Appalachian, 70-27, but Coach Gault says that the Fighting Christians have a much better ball club than that ED PAULLING Last season Elon knocked the Hose off their perch as the ninth- ranked small college team in the nation, so revenge will play an important role in this year’s battle. Elon is led offensively by Bur- gin Beale throwing to the league’s top receiver, Richard McGeorge, and by last season’s top Elon rusher, Emery Moore. Last year the Beale to McGeorge combination proved fatal to the Hose, but Gault is hoping that the improved secondary this sea son will be able to contain Elon’s passing attack.
