Once I was on my way to a world of darkness. Once I was not able to see very well but now I can see.* With those opening remarks, the Rev. Emerson L. Isler, pas tor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Trenton, went on to tell the Clinton Lions Club last week the story of how corneal transplants had saved his eyesight. Isler said that he was going blind when he received his first transplant in the “Eye Bank* program sponsored by Lions Clubs. The first transplant was not successful but a second oper ation was successful. He received the cornea of a six-year-old boy who had died. He is scheduled to have an operation on his other eye in 1969. He pointed out that over 20,000 people need corneal transplants and only about 3,000 transplants are being performed each year. “This means that 17,000 must still wait in darkness and twilight,’ he said, “Thousands wait in dark ness and twilight. They wait for eye donors who care. They will continue to wait until more peo ple become aware of the criti cal need and are willing to donate their eyes. Thousands could be gin to see today if other thousands would will their eyes when they can no longer use them. “. . .Every time a person dies and is buried with his eyes, two or more people must continue to wait in darkness or dimming light.’ Rev. Isler said that success of transplants has risen from 20 percent to 85 per cent because of constant research. Th* Clinton Lions Clubnartici- pates in the South Carolina Eye Bank, Inc.
