Date for the screening is Thursday, August 22. Parents of third and sixth graders are re quested to make an appointment with the optometrist of their choice. This will be the fourth conse cutive year that third and sixth graders are given a free visual screening -- as a public ser vice -- by memliers of the S.C. Optometric Association. These years were chosen be cause they are key years in the development of the school child, The kindergarten is proud to announce the addition of a new teacher to the staff, Mrs. Curtis Wallace. Mrs. Wallace is a grad uate of Winthrop with further education atErskide and Furman. Mrs. Wallace has had seven year’s experience teaching in elementary schools, has done substitute kindergarten teaching and also observed in kindergar ten situations. Other staff mem bers are Mr. AverySmith, chair man of the kindergarten commit tee; Mrs. J. P. Rowland, director and teacher; and Mrs. Carlton Winn, treasurer. There are a limited number of vacancies in the kindergarten. Anyone desiring further infor mation may call the church office or Mrs. Rowland. Graders says Dr. Phillip Burrell, presi dent of the S. C. Optometric Association. According to Burrell, children w r ho display obvious visual prob lems -- squinting, blinking, cross-eyes, etc. -- are in need of professional visual examina tions because these problems tend to get worse with the passage of time. Burrell also pointed out the de ficiencies of mass-screening programs, and urged parents not to place too great a reliance on the chart eye test. “A child’s ability to read let ters on a chart does not give a complete picture of his visual performance,’ Burrell said.
