C., June 20, 1%8 Chronicle SPORTS Js Swimming Classes Get Fast Start BY JOHN BINGHAM YMCA Director Swimming got off to a fast start last Monday with some 200 people signing up to take swimming instruction in the four YMCA Swim Clubs. About 130 of these people were entered in the Minnow Club, or beginner class. The remainder were placed in advanced classes; Fish Club, Flying Fish Club, and the Shark Club. During the week we had nine people finish the Fish Club and were promoted to the Flying Fish THANK YOU For Re-Electing Me As One of Your Coun ty Commissioners. GEORGE PENLAND Club. They are Randy Ward, John Wallace, Sheila Kent, RickySher- rill, Ben Pitts, Randy Heaton, Marty Harris, Donna Kidd, and Donnie Kidd. They received cer tification cards and are now eli gible to wear the Official YMCA Fish Club Swim Patch. Recreational swimming turned out to be the most popular at traction in town when the pools opened last Monday. The weather was just right for a dip. Some 500 entered the pools on each of the first two days the pools were open. Attendance during the week ran close to 3,000 for both pools. Playgrounds, along with ar chery and tennis instruction, counted about 100 per day Monday through Friday and this number is expected to increase as the local churches finish their Bible Schools. Girls softball is planned to get under way in the mornings this week at the high school field. All girls interested in playing should report to the field Thurs day morning, June 20. YOUTH LEAGUE BASEBALL Last Monday saw the opening game played in the YMCA Youth Baseball Leagues and continues with each team playing two games during the week. Games are played on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Small Fry and Little League Division. The Pony League opened its season Monday, also playing games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thrusday. There are six teams in the Small Fry League, six teams in the Little League and 5 teams in the Pony League, making a total in the Youth Di vision of 17 teams. W. 1 1 Clinton Host To Greenwood Team Tonight Clinton’s American Legion team is scheduled to play host to Greenwood tonight at the Clin ton Mill Park. The game is to start at 8 p.m. On Friday night, Clinton goes to Greenwood. Clinton has a 2-1 league re cord and suffered its only loss at the hands of Greenwood. Two games this week were rained out After opening with4-2 winover Newberry, Clinton clouted Ware Shoals 10-4 and then was blanked 15-0 by Greenwood. Clinton gave up 14 unearned runs in the Green wood game. Clinton has a full schedule next week because of the rained-out games this week. On Monday, Clinton will play host to New berry and will be at Ware Shoals on Tuesday. Clinton will be at Newberry Wednesday and will play host to Ware Shoals next Thursday, June 27, and will be at Newberry on Friday, June 28. Cruickshonks Signs Grant With PC Sandy Cruickshanks, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. King of Clinton, has signed a football grant-in-^id at Presbyterian College. The son jf Mr. and Mrs. Alex Cruickshanks of Gainesville, Fla., he is a split end and kick ing specialist. His mother is the former Robbie King, a native of Clinton. Cruickshanks, who stands 5-11 and weights 183 pounds, attended George Washington University but that school dropped football and he transferred to Gardner- Webb Junior College from which he recently graduated. The umpire is Pat Lowe. — (Photo by Bill Quarles) Joanna Suffers First Loss In Softball Loop Joanna suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Lydia team last Monday evening 15 to 10. Both teams scored two runs in the opening inning with Lydia scoring one in the second making the score 3 to 2 after 2 complete innings of play. In the third inning both teams tallied with 3 runs each making the score 6 to 5 likewise in the 4th inning both teams kept the pace going by scoring 5 runs each, making the score 11 to 10. Lydia went ahead by scoring 3 runs in the 5th while Joanna failed to cross the plate. Lydia was never behind in the game and won 15 to 10. Lydia scored its 15 runs on 15 hits and Joanna scored its 10 runs on 15 hits. In the second game of play last Monday evening, the Jaycees downed Rock Ridge Presbyter ians 10 to 3. The Jaycees were never in danger throughout the game, and scored their 10 runs on 18 hits while the Rock Ridge Presbyterians scored their 3 runs on 8 hits. on 17 hits, while Rock Ridge scored their 13 runs on 14 hits. In the second game of the eve ning, Lydia defeated the Jaycees 17 to 13. Both teams scored in every inning except the 7th. Jo anna had to come from behind to win after they were down 10 to 1 after 4 innings of play. They scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 5th to tie the score at 10 all.
