Hall, assistant plant man ager of Greenwood Plants Nos. 4 and 5, will study advanced yarn manufacturing June 3-14. T. Dale Boyd, a supervisor of weaving in Mathews Plant No. 2, will study weaving fabric design and development during the same period. James E. Harris, assistant plant manager ofDurst Plant, will participate in a graduate seminar in industrial administration June 3-7. Food Shopping Guide BY ANN LEE MePHAIL Clemson Extension Consumer Editor When you buy strawberries in the market or pick your own, you’ll get the finest flavor if you choose those that look clean and bright, with dry glossy sur faces. If they are all to be served immediately it is important that they have an overall red color. Bright glossy berries that are part red and part pink when pur chased will continue to rippen it room temperature. Big berries have much eye appeal, and take less time to prepare than little ones. However, small berries of the same quality taste just as good as large ones and may give a larger yield. Berries with dull surfaces, soft spots or decay are not only likely to give low yields but are usually off-flavor. Half the battle of getting all the flavor from this highly per ishable fruit is to select good berries. The other half depends qd the care you give then. Buy no more than you can ufte or process within a day or two and see that they are not spilled or mashed in the grocery bag. At home, pour the berries into shallow trays and remove any that are spoiled. If they have reached the desired stage of ripening, store them unwashed in the refrigerator in a tightly covered container or process immediately. If some need further ripening, spread these out at room temperature until they are red all over; then refrigerate. Just before using, wash the berries gently and quickly in a bowl of cold water or under running water. If the berries stand in water, they loose color and flavor. Strawberries not only taste good, they are good for us. A half cup of strawberries pro vides about two-thirds of the Vi tamin C needs of a healthy adult adding only 28 calories. If you wish to use artificial sweeteners, add just at serving time. Tex tures change as berries stand after sweetener is added.
