Ow ens, who has been with the depart ment for -11 years, recalls that the city had a T-Model truck when he joined the force July 1, 1927. Since then the city has changed trucks four times, counting the newest one. The fire department was located in the old telephone office building on South Broad Street when Owens joined the department. It moved in 1934 to its present quarters and plans are now underway for a new city office com plex on North Broad Street. J C. Scott GAFFNEY - J. Carl Scott, 79, father of Mrs. Olin B. Bell of Clinton, died Sunday morning in a Gaffney hospital. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday at Shuford-Hat- cher Funeral Home with burial in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Other survivors include his wife, two other daughters, a step daughter, a son, two brothers, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Osborne WHITMIRE - Mrs. Lillie John son Osborne, 83, died Saturday night in a Clinton hospital. Survivors include three sons, Evans and Robert B. Osborne of Whitmire and Rev. John H. Os borne of Clinton; a brother, Em mett Johnson of Lee County, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Mollie Thomas of Whitmire; and 13 grand children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Whitmire Cemetery. Mrs Donald COWPENS - Mrs. Emmie Don ald, 80, mother of Mrs. Lucille Dunaway of Clinton, died Sunday morning at a Spartanburg hospi tal. Other survivors include three sons, two other daughters, a sis ter, 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday atC mverse Bap tist Church with burial in Sun set Memorial Park. Mrs. Kirby Mrs. Mattie Lou Arthur Kirby, 75, sister of Earl Arthur of Jo anna, died Wednesday, May 22, in a Greenville hospital. A former resident of Laurens, whe had lived in Greenville for the past five years. For many years, she was engaged in tex tiles in Clinton and Laurens. She was a member of Lucas Avenue Baptist Church in Laurens. Other survivors include a daughter; three sons; two other brothers; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted F riday at the Mackey Mor tuary with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Laurens. Mrs. Young Mrs. Chicora Young, 80, died in a Columbia hospital Sunday. She was a member of the Wo man’s Aid Society No. 17, Lau rens Aid Society No. 1 and Mis sionary Circle No. 12. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary Lou Copeland of Washing ton, D. C., and a brother, Calvin Chappell of Spartanburg. Funeral services will be con ducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. W. D. Coker. Burial will tie in the church cemetery. The family is at the home of Leola Chappell on Gary Street, Clinton. J. T. Simmons ENOREE - J. Toy Simmons, 67, father of Hames H. Simmons of Clinton, died in a Woodruff hospital Wednesday morning, May 22. Mr. Simmons resided onRoute 2, Enoree. He was a retired employe of Arkwright Mills. Other survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Hembree Simmons; another son, Donald F. Simmons of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Lester Layton of Cross Anchor, Mrs. Corrle Crowe of Woodruff and Mrs. Ho ward Skinner of Route 2, Wood ruff; four brothers, Lawrence and Elijah Simmons of Route 2, Wood ruff; Collier Simmons of Route 2, Enoree, and George Simmons of Forest City, N.C.; and a grand child. Funeral services were held Friday in Cedar Shoals Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Nelson Manager Of Sears Store E. W. (Eric) Nelson has assumed his duties as manager of the Sears Store in Clinton. He and his wife, Elizabeth, moved here from Myrtle Beach where he was credit manager, assistant manager and service manager of the Sears store there. A veterans of eight years with the U. S. Air Force, he is a native of Elmira, N. Y. Gaffney Win* U.S. Flying Cross First Lieutenant Charles M Gaffhey Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Gaffney of Route 2, Clinton, has been decorated with the Distinguished FlyingCrossat Binh Thuy AB, Vietnam, for brav ery in military operations in Southeast Asia. Lieutenant Gaffney received the medal for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-47 pilot. The lieutenant flew a mission in support of friendly forces en gaged with the enemy. He and his crew courageously and accurate ly pressed the attack resulting in a significant victory. Lieutenant Gaffney is assigned to D Flight, 3rd Air Commando Squadron, a unit of the Pacific Air Forces. A 1960 graduate of Clinton High School, he received his B.A. de gree in 1964 from Clemson Uni versity where he was com missioned through the Air Force Reserve Officers TrainingCorps program. His wife, Sylvia, is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Summerville, 300 S. Owens St., Clinton. Bonds Crossroads News BY MRS. N. A. Mrs. Hulon Howard and son Chris of Greer spent last week with Mrs. Hulon’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morgan. Lt. and Mrs. Kenneth John son have returned to Dallas after spending some time with Mr. and Mrs. Earle Johnson. Prayer service is held each Wednesday evening at 7:30 at Fairview Baptist. Homecoming will be observed Sunday June 2, at the Penticostal Holliness Church on Whitmire Road. In case of rain the dinner will be served in Shady Grove Club house. Mr. and Mrs. John Brewer are receiving congratulations on a 6 lb. 4 oz. babyboy, Walter Jack- son Brewer, born at Bailey Me morial hospital on May 12. Mrs. Brewer was before her marriage Shirley Morgan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morgan. Shady Grove Homemakers Club will meet at the club house June 4 at 4 o’clock. At this meeting plans will be made to attend the state meeting at Winthrop Col lege. Project leaders will charge of the program. have In Vietnam Staff Sergeant Harley E. Kind- ley Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Kindley of Rt 1, Mount- ville, Is on duty at Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam. Sergeant Kindley, a supply in ventory specialist, is a member of the Pacific Air Forces. Before his arrival in Vietnam, he was assigned to Paine Field, Wash.
