Adams is ill at Kenneth Meeks underwent surgery last week at Bailey Me morial Hospital. Tan Windsor has returned home after being a patient at the Navy Hospital in Charleston. TRANSFERRED Private Michael Entrekin, son of Rev. and Mrs. J. Furman Entrekin, has been transferred from Ft. Jackson to Ft. Gordon, Georgia to take his basic training. SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY Miss Velda Farmer honored her mother, Mrs. Claude Far mer with a surprise birthday party at their home, 504 Bailey St, on Friday evening, May 3. Friends, neighbors, and relatives helped to celebrate the occasion and enjoyed refreshments of birthday cake, ice cream and coke. She received many nice gifts. Out of town guest were Mr. and Mrs. Randell Farmer and boys of Laurens; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cole and Mrs. Edna Ballard and daughter, Libby, of Joanna. Soil Stewardship , Week Is May 19-26 •A TIME FOR INITIATIVE* is the theme of the 1968 obser vance of Soil Stewardship Week throughout America, to be cele brated May 19-26. The Laurens Soil and Water Conservation Dis trict, in cooperation with the ministers of Laurens County, are planning county-wide observance this year. Soil Stewardship is a week set aside nationally each year to call attention to everyone’s moral re sponsibility as a steward of the soil and other natural resources provided by God. Nationally, the week’s observance is sponsored by the National Association of Soil and Water Conservation Dis tricts with the guidance of an interdenominational Soil Ste wardship Advisory Committee. Milton Y. Blakely, a super visor of the Laurens Soil and Water Conservation District, has been named chairman of the local Soil Stewardship Week Com mittee. Plans for observance of Soil Stewardship Week were initiated at a planning conference for upper South Carolina held at Presby terian College on April 2. Attending the conference from Laurens County were Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Lawson and daughter, Janet. Mr. Lawson is chairman ol the local District and had a very active part in planning for the conference; Reverend Guy Smith and Mrs. Smith. Mr. Smith is pas tor of the Ora ARP Church and District Chaplain; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Y. Blakely; and Mr. and Mrs. James B. O’Dell. West, speak ing at a banquet at Whitten Vill age, said last week that South Carolina is “on the verge of one of the greatest eras of progress in its history.* However, he also warned that the state must face up to finan cial problems which come with economic growth. He said, “The complex age in which we live has put a higher degree ofburden upon the govern ment. Our problems cannot be solved by government alone but by people working together." West was featured speaker at the annual banquet of the Laurens County unit of the State Em ployees Association. About 250 people attended the event which was held at the Whitten Village Shelter Area. In a business session at the meeting, W. I. Ledford was elected president of the county unit. H. W. Wilson was elected vice president and Mrs. Cath erine Craven was elected secre tary-treasurer. West was introduced by State Sen. W. C. (Bill) Dobbins. Discussing thestate’sprogess, West pointed out that the state budget 50 years ago was around $2 million and that this year’s appropriations bill will be about $750 million. Concerning the state’s industrial development, he said that new plants are going up on land that “15 years ago you couldn’t give away."
