I Boys Have 3-1 Record Clinton Gagers Host Laurens Friday Clinton High School’s boys and girls basketball teams play host to Laurens Friday night in their only Class AA Eastern Conference action prior to the Chritmas holi days. The girls’ game will start at 7 p. m. with the boys game to follow. There will be no junior varsity game Friday night. Clinton’s boys ran their record to 3-1 Tuesday night with a 48-34 win over Ware Shoals, It was Clinton’s sec ond straight triumph over Ware Shoals as the Red Dev ils captured a 66-48 decision last Friday. Clinton’s girls, after win ning their first two games, lost two straight to Ware Shoals, 40-26 on Friday and 44-26 Tuesday night. Gary Campbell was Clin ton’s leading scorer in the first game against Ware Shoals as he hit for a total of 18 points. Chris Adair scored 14. In Tuesday night’s game, Bobby Reynolds tallied 21 points and Adair had 15. Clinton had to come from behind to win Tuesday’s game. Ware Shoals led 21-17 at halftime but the Red Dev ils fought back and had tied the score by the end of the third quarter. Clinton moved ahead early in the fourth quarter but didn’t break the game open until the last two and a half minutes of play. Coach Herman Jackson said, “Reynolds played a fine game for us and Chris- Adair probably played his best game thus far. Buzzy Teddards came 6ff the bench - and played well.” Reynolds, a senior, is the leading scorer on the team with a 17.4 average for the first four games. Chris Adair, a junior, has an 11-point average and senior Gary Campbell is averaging nine points per game. Coach Jackson says Laur ens has a young team that is about equal to Clinton in heighth. The Laurens team is paced by A. J. Cox and Larry Sterling. The Red Devils will play at Gaffney in a tripleleader Tuesday night to wind up their pre-holiday schedule. M': m'M t 1:1 'X- Jr «$ Freeman Leaning To USC Clinton High School senior end Billy Freeman, who re cently added all-state honors to his football accolades, is expected to sign a football grant-in-aid with the Univer sity of South Carolina. ’ Ffepman was named to the .first team on the all-state se lection of the South Carolina ^Sports Writers Association. He previously was named to the class AA all-state team was named to both the offensive and defensive All- Eastern Conference teams, and played in the recent Shrine Bowl. Saturday is the signing date for college grants-in-aid and Freeman reportedly is leaning toward South Caro lina. Clinton Halfback Gary Campbell, a AA All-State) and all-conference pick, also has attracted interest of the college scouts and also is ex pected to be offered a schol arship by USC. Mussleman Sees Spark In Loss Presbyterian College’s Blue Hose basketball team closed out its pre-holiday schedule on a losing note last week but Coach Art Musselman saw something he liked, even in defeat. Discussing PC’s 71-66 loss to strong, tall Catawba, Mus sleman said, “We defensed ’em, nose-to-nose. We should have won. We had three op portunities to win the game but we threw every chance away. They had a tremendous height advantage over us but we worked hard. “I think the turning point of the game came When Ken Martion (senior guard) fouled out with 13 minutes remain ing in the game.” PC came back from a 31-28 halftime deficit to tie the score at 61-61 with 2:28 re maining in the game. How ever, the Blue Hose threw the ball away three times in a row when a basket might have been the difference. Richard Quillen led the PC scoring with 20 points. De spite fouling out, Martin hit for 14 points. Catawba star Dwight Durante had 19 as did Garland Davis. Coach Musselman praised the defensive efforts of Bob by Quillen and George Dick erson who took turns gard- ing Durante, man-to-man. The Blue Hose’s next game will be at Catawba on Jan. 6. Quillen Leads Blue Hose Scorers Richard Quillen, a 6-1 sen ior from Kingsport, Tenn., is the leading scorer on the Presbyterian College basket ball team. Through the first six games, Quillen averaegs 18.2 points per game. Last sea- games, Quillen averaged 18.2 points per game for the sea son. Kirkland resigned Monday after 16 years as head coach at Newberry College. Gault commented, “Har vey has done a tremendous job at Newberry College and has given them some of their finest hours in football. “It is regrettable that he decided to leave after a poor season because I believe he has the making of a fine team for the future. He played many freshmen this season and their experience should pay off in years to come.” * ^ j Kirkland’s team had a 1-8-1 record this season and had a 72-77-11 mark for his career at Newberry. His best season was in 1953 when his team lost only to Furman, won seven straight, and then was tied 7-7 by Presbyterian College. Preabyterian Coach Gault had a 4-1 record against Kirkland’s Newberry teams and this season PC won the Thanksgiving Day classic 14-0. , Rumor has it that the New berry job may be offered to Clemson Assistant Art Bak er, a graduate of PC, or to one of two high school coach es in the state.
