Florence Nightingale was hpra on Max 12, 1820 pf.weal^. thy English parents. Always serious as a young woman, she began visiting hospitals in 1844, with the idea that it was her duty to help improve hospital sanitation methods. In 1849,- on a tour of Egypt with friends, she visited the school and hospital of The Order of St. Vincent and learned the need for formal discipline in hospital nurs ing. When she returned to England she took every available training course for nurses and afterward became superintendent of nurses in a London hospital. In 1854, during the Crimean War, the government sent her to the Crimea, with ' a staff of 38 nurses, to take charge of the sick and wounded soldiers. When she arrived in the battle zone, she immediately attacked the ter rible conditions ’ which exist ed, where 42 percent of the sick and wounded were dy ing. In just 3 months she and her staff had reduced this percentage to a mere 2 per cent. An attack of Crimean Fev er while she continued to nurse thousands of casualties permanently impaired her health, but this ministering angel who never married, friend of Quebn Victoria, apd decorated with the Order of Merit, continued to fight for better hospital care until her death August 13. 1910.
