There are many different insecticides available along with several different methods of apply ing them. Shown above is a demonstration of dust bags being used. If bags are kept dry, excellent re sults can be expected. $ ¥ * Pictured above is the towering elevator at Owings, which belongs to Willis Seed Co. (Francis and John Willis) and makes things look prosperous around there. Also, the farmers there and in surrounding areas are fortunate to have a grain elevator in Owings. And ad ditional market always helps the price of beans or grain. The capacity of these bins is 26,000 bushels. They are in the process of putting up a new bin to be completed in September which will increase the capacity to 33,000 bush els. There is also a 75 : foot elevator which can handle 2,000 bushels per hour. They also have the facilities to load direct to trailer trucks andOfirr. Ther£ is a truck lift to dump all size trucks. This is really a one- man operation. Storage may become a problem for soybeans if weather conditions continue to hold favorable. Laurens County probably has 15,000 or more acres planted. Most of these will be harvested and the beans moved into commercial channels to be used for human and livestock food as well as many other commercial uses. Oftentimes, farm storage means the difference in a poor and a good crop of grain or beans. If the com bine has to stand in the field while the truck is in a long line at the elevator, there is usually some very valuable time being wasted. Weather conditions play a very big role in the final outcome and the weather man doesn’t guarantee anything at soy bean harvest time or any time as for that matter. Where storage is available, the combine can keep on the go and should be able to save more of the crop while the grade is at its best. OFFICE SUPPLIES THE CHRONICLE Please! Only you can PREVENT FOREST FIRES! It is always hard to go all the way when investing in grain storage equipment. Engineers tell us that dry ing equipment is well worth the money and will pay for the cost very early. Field losses are always high at best, so engineers tell us that grain may be harvested slightly on the heavy side which reduces shattering. Without question the grade can be maintained by the fact that insect losses are reduced. Moldy grain also is eliminated. So, if buying storage equipment, consider a dryer along with it. Another saving, and not by any means least, is price on grain. Usually at harvest the price is the lowest. Where storage is available, a price advantage is most al ways realized. I understand that the gov ernment has grain storage bins in many of the mid- western states that are for sale at a very reasonable rate. This is a g6od oppor tunity to get the much need ed storage increased on many farms in Laurens County. I suggest you get in touch with the local ASCS of fice if interested. Visiting in Laurens County last week, we had John Wise, Extension Livestock Management Specialist from Clemson University. He was grading calves on the farms of George Wasson and Leon ard Gabbert of White Plains Farm. Also, we had J. B.
