IF YOU DON'T READ THE CHRONICLE YOU DON’T GET THE NEWS The Revelers Bring Joy To All—Even Revivalists By ZEB WILLIAMS Last Thursday night The Revelers made the heart of every Welshman in Clinton glad as the nationally-famous quartet opened their second concert in Clinton with the beloved “Men of Harlech,” the national anthem of Wales. And what a rendition it was! Even the Revelers them selves felt satisfied with the number—perhaps due to the applause of two faithful sons of Saint Davids. One was even tempted to stand in quiet rev erence but then too many of the Scotch-Irish in ence wouldn't have ujiiiSr stood. The Revelers gave a widely- varied program; from Schu bert’s “Who Is Sylvia” and “Wohin?”, sung in German, to folk songs, sea cantys, Negro Spirituals, and barbershop. To prove thei/ cosmopolitan tra dition, The Revelers sang “Greensleeves” for the Ri lish in the audience, “A- , fiia< to Ireland,” and “Drill, Ye Terriers” for the Irish, and “The Drunken Sailor”—enjoy ed by many of the Presbyte rian students. The audience at Belk Audi torium, the largest of the sea son, liked their version of “Kum Ba Yah,” a familiar spiritual with a loud ending. But the favorite song had to be “Shall We Gather at The River?” presented in such an original style and sung so well that the Methodists started looking forward to camp meeting time. Everyone was impressed with the Revelers unique uni- sN*»-and^the jgreat volume for only"-four voices. Each mem ber of this fine quartet is a solo artist -in his own right. All of the men are conserva tory graduates and have sung with the greatest groups in the country. Undoubtedly, they will go on to even greater suc cess as soloists as former members of this old quartet h as- James fielton have 1C. m -f*» - — The accompanist, David Morgan of Jackson, Miss., was almost perfect on the pi ano. At no time did he over power the quartet or distract from the blending of *velces. He did come into his own in “Shall We Gather At The Riv er?” with his own rollicking arrangement of this revival favorite. Mr. Morgan had high regard for the Steinway in Belk Auditorium and much praise goes to Chuck Gaines for securing. such an instru ment for Clinton. The Revel ers said they would be lucky to find four or five such pi anos during a year’s tour. The quartebfelt that Clinton was a responsive audience., Maybe this is because the au dience knew the Revelers were genuinely friendly and enjoyed singing In Clinton—as compared to previous artists who pretend to be so Sophisti cated and bored with anything “small town.’» But to a minister who listens to too many choirs lacking in male voices and to livv in an area s u f f e r i n g from the “American Sissy Comples,” just to sit and hear r’bust men’s voices raised in joyful singing was only one iliing— pure pleasure! They're afraid nobody will know they have any money, if it doesp’t show in their car. In other words, they buy their car for other people. Not themselves. Then there are those who earn enough to buy a much better car than the VW. But th^V don’t. Because they can’t find on*. for them the best car is one that simply pels them there. Comfortably and eco nomically. One they dpn’t have to worry about. That doesn't make many stops for gas. And rarely needs repairs. A car where rare repairs don't cost much. A car where the car doesn't cost much. They feel they can afford to save money with a Volkswagen. Now next time you see somebody driving a VW don't feel sorry for him. Who knows? Someday the bank might be using his money to give you a new car loan.
