The defendant, George Thomas Allen, received a three-year sentence, which Will be suspended after ser vice of 18 months, followed by two years of probation. S. C. State Highway Patrol man Gerald Dobson, t^ld the court Allen was the driver of a 1966 Comet that was in col lision wtih a 1963 Ford on Sec ondary Highway 29 about three miles west of Waterloo last August. Dead as a result of the crash were Sammy Burdette, driver of the Ford > and Dan ny L. Allen, owner of the Comet and one of its three occupants, the patrolman tes tified. Dobson said the Allen car was on the wrong side of the road at the poing of. collision in a sharp curve. He also said the speed of the Comet in the posted 35-miles-an-hour zone was estimated at 55 to 60 miles an hour. Calvin Bridges, attorney for the defendant, said Allen told him he did not know whether he was driving the car at the time of the acci dent. Allen received injuries in the wreck “sufficient to cause loss of memory,” Bridges said doctors told him. Allen appeared in court on crutches with casts on both feet. Eddie Leake Jr., 21-year-, old Laurens County Negro, was sentenced to seven years after pleading guilty to man slaughter in the March 18 fa tal shooting of Joe Nathan Todd, 19, at a tavern near Waterloo. Leake also pleaded guilty to charges of assault and bat tery of a high and aggravated nature in the wounding of James Seigler and S. L. Tur ner in the same shooting in cident and was given two concurrent four - year sen tences on the charges. Other defendants entering guilty pleas and sentences imposd by Prsiding Judge John Gnmball were: Joe Griffin, malicious en try to personal property, six months or $600. suspended, six months probation. Jerry Brown, enticing a child from an institution, two years or $2,000. suspended af ter service of six months or payment of $500, and a year's probation. Leroy Perkins, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, three months, suspended upon pay ment of $250. ~ -— Willy George Rice, using a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. 30 days or $100. ' Halpass Simmons, assault and battery of a high ahd ag gravated nature, six months or $500. suspended on pay ment of the medical expenses of the prosecuting witness. 4-H f er of the Week ANN SIMMONS This is 14-year-old Ann Simmon’s fourth year in the Camak 4-H Club. Some of the projects she has had over the past years are home im provement, foods and nutri tion, clothing, dress revue, safety, electric, and public speaking. Arn is presently vfee-presi- dent of the Camak Senior 4-H Club and has held the offices of program chairman and secretary and treasurer in past years. Ann has received recogni tion in local and county com petition in the areas of cloth ing, home improvements, foods and nutrition, and safety. She has received rec ognition for her 4-H work at j.e past three annual 4-H Achievement banquets. She is a member of the Harmony Methodist Church where she is secretary and treasurer of her Sunday School class and a member of the MYF. Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Simmons of Rt. 1, Ware Shoals. She is a 9th grade student at Ware Shoals High School where she is a member of the Science Club. F. T. A. Club, F. H. A. Club and a member of the va- slty basketball team. Mrs. Robert Johnson Named Secretary Of Educaton Group . Mrs, Robert Johnson, assis tant director of guidance at Presbyterian College, has been elected secretary of the Guidance Section of the Pres byterian Education Associa tion of the South. Mrs. John son recently participated in a three-day workshop of this organization at its semi-an nual meeting at Montreat, N. C. The membership of the Gui dance Section of the Associa tion is composed of profes sional personnel of the twelve guidance centers in the south eastern states sponsored by the Presbyterian Church U. S. The next meeting of the organization will be held in Dallas, Texas, in March in conjunction with the annual convention of the American Personnel and Guidance Asso ciation. Mental Health Meeting Is Held Dr. Eli M. Bower of the National Institute of Mental Health Bethesda, Maryland, was the keynote speaker for the annual meeting of the S. C. Mental Health Association held last week at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston. “Prevention of Mental Ill ness” was the theme of the talk. Work shops were held during th e two-day meet on the pre - school child, the school age, and the adult. Mrs. L. S. Lockett and Mrs. J. R. Mathews of the Whit ten Village Staff attended. Dr. William Hollister, as sociate professor and director of community psychiatry sec tion, department of psychia try, school of medicine, Uni versity of North Carolina, was the speaker for the lun cheon. An invitation was extended by the Greenville Association to be host for next year’s ses sion.
