I il THF CLINTON CHRONICLE v- Clinton, 9. C„ Thursday, October 6, 1960 By SPECTATOR . . . COMMENTS ON MEN AND THINGS Well, what about sleep? Do you enjoy refreshing sleep and wake next morning re freshed and feeling the ting le of renewed energy? Are you in the mood of a world conqueror, or do you drag yourself out of bed with a groan? Some men need a lot of sleep, nine hours; others may indulge themselves in sleep ten hours? The average of eight hours seems about right, provided you sleep, sleep restfully. President Wilson, a highly intellectual man, slept about nine hours, as 1 recall. Na poleon Bonaparte slept about three or four hours and car ried a small library with him on his campaigns. When all the officers and men were asleep, except those on guard duty, the great military gen ius studied maps and cam paigns and started the day with a clear mipd and well- studied program. "Sleep is one of man's must essential processes, yet in many ways its is the mpst baf fling. For without sufficient sleep we may actually become physically ill, and people de prived of sleep for exetended periods of time even may be come psychotic. Some people can get along surprisingly well on little sleep, and the ambitious per son may regard sleep as a time-waster. But those who do not enjoy life, or find dif ficulty meeting its demands, welcome sleep as a refuge. A great mapy people, of course, seek this refuge with barbiturates a n d other sleep ing potions. But research has proven that these drugs do net produce normal sleep, and that an individual is not real ly rested from such a sleep. A vicious cycle is set up: The individual craves more sleep and takes more pills, which only leads to less satis- factory sleep and the need for more phis. The study of brain waves shows that sleep occurs in four stages, with the sleeper passing from one stage to the other in a cflstinct pattern through the night. Our minds are quite active during sleep; evident from the fact that we dream. Some dreams are pleasant and some reflect pur anxieties, triggering physio logical responses that are m a * ' nifested in a rise in blood pressure and pulse rate and an increase in the rate of res piration. Scientists can tell when an individual is dreaming by- measuring his responses, a technique of great medical va lue. The physjolqgic responses may explain the occnrrence of a heart attack or sudden death during sleep, for the many changes are taking place in our company Chemstrand Is Now " ‘'s Textile Division but. .. the emphasis is still on People Since January of this year: * ▲ n«w and improved benefit* program hat been added * A general wage increase was announced * Vocations have been lengthened * 30 persons haYe been promoted to supervisory and other salaried positions Now.., Revised Employment Standards at the Greenwood Plant offer Employment Opportunities to all People, Regardless of Age or Formal Education! OCTOBER 10-11-12-13-14-15 IR TIME IS HERE!! individual may not be at com plete rest at all. He may, in fact, be undergoing marked physiologic activity not read ily apparent. An individual reaches the deepest, or delta, level of sleep after a hariMiour. This i$ the most tranqqil period, lasting only 20 minutes. Then there is a gradual return to the level of sleep where dreaming is active. After a •short period he begins to drift downward again, later to re turn to the more superficial level. This cycle continues through the night in q charac teristic pattern for eqch indi vidual. Insomnia is an intriguing Condition that means differ ent things to different people. Insomnia, authorities believe, is not the symptom of an un derlying physical or emotional distress. Instead, Is may sim ply be that the individual has failed to resolve his attitude toward sleep because of some underlying disturbance. Thus, a true insomniac may be fighting sleep because he is afraid to iose consciousness and continues to worry about his responsibilities, working as hard at night as during the day. The first step in relieving insomnia is to convince the individual that sleep will not be destructive, qr lead to a breakdown. He must under stand the mechanisms of sleep, and recognize the ten sions that have led to the dif ficulty. The individual should learn that the best way to handle his problem is to do something constructive if he can’t sleep, and discover the sleep pattern most beneficial to his physiologic needs.” 1 have seldom been a dream er, but during my three per iods in a hospital — about eighteen weeks — I dreamed every night, usually going on long trips. 1 used to amuse my physician in the mornings with the account of my dream trav el of the night before. I think my dreaming may have been due to sleeping on my back, as I was in bed with dislocated hip, shoulder and two broken bones. My dreaming did not keep me awake. We are a'rl highly individu alistic and re-act differently. Views Of Our Readers ADULT EDUCATION Editor, The Chronicle: Somewhere — quite close to you—there is somebody who can’t read this article and who needs the basic educa tion which they missed in younger life; this education is offered without charge to individuals, but persons who are reading this message are needed to carry the word to prospective enrollees. There are about 5,000 people in the area of Clinton who need to enroll ip such a class. Readers of the Clinton Chronicle are asked to look about them and urge persons who have not completed high school to join in the back-to- school march along with thousands of adults in many cities and towns all over this nation. This lack of an educa tion is found at all economic levels, but a large number of persons are found in particu lar sections of quf town. The person may be found in churches, on jobs, at civic functions. He may be a neighbor, a relative, or a friend. He may be eighteen years of age or he may be eighty. He may be a welfare recipient or a person with a job, but a desire for a better job. He is everywhere, and he needs to be found and di rected to an Adult Education class. Adult Education classes will teach enrollees many things. If a person cannot read and write, he will meet in classes with other persons of similar limitations and learn new knowledges and skills. If he knows how to read and write but he feels that he needs additional practice, or he needs high school work for credit and a high schol di ploma he will find assistance in these classes. In addition to these areas, there will be courses offered in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Typing. If there is a person near our readers, who can profit from such education, he should be urged to enroll. He may call 833-2604 or 833- 2075 e for further information or he may go to Clinton High School or Bell Street HigA School any Monday or Tues day night and enroll from 7 jtill 9 p.m. and get started lately in the challeng- g experience of returning to hool. Doctor Talk By Rembert Benjamin, M.D. In the genaral topic of al lergy most individuals con nect allergy with conditions of the respiratory tract and the skin. It is true that the majority of symptoms of al lergic disease do involve the nose, throat, or lungs and the skin, but theoretically, and tissue or organs of the body may be the site of involve ment. Allergic reactions involving practically every organ and system of the body have been recorded hi medical writings —such the the ocular system and the gastrointesinal tract and even the joints of the feet; but the renal and cardio vascular systems have rarely been affected. The prevalent complaint of headache certainly has an al lergic reaction as the causa tive factor in many case*. The allergic headache is re ferred to as a nondescript headache oftqn due to an allergic reaction to a food dnd not necessarily associated With respiratory! allergy- The allergy headache is of ten described by the patient to be a throbbing pain or ache originating over the eyes, then gradually spread ing and becoming generalized over the head. Characteristic of the allergic headache is the fact that the pain pattern varies so from patient to patient—in short, the typical feature of the allergic head ache is that it is not typical. Ocular allergy is quite com mon with the typical symp toms of itching and burning of the eyes or swelling and redness of the eyelids. This allergic condition of the eye may extend beyond the Jids and conjunctiva, in some cases involving the vornea and even the deeper struct ures of the eye. Allergic reactions involv ing the stomach can be quite alarming at times,* with dis tress so great as to raise the question of the possibility of a peptic ulcer or some other acute gastric crisis. As the reader can see, al lergy can play an Important part In the general health of all. OFFICE SUPPLIES CHRONICLE PUB. CO. PHONE 833-0541 AUTO INSURANCE W. S.
