/ ;• /. >. Clinton, S. C., Thursday, September 8, 1966 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE EVERYDAY COUNSELOR By .DR. HERBERT SPAUGH True love must be demno- strated in deeds as well as words. Both are needed. I’ve just come across a news story which occurred test winter out in Minnesota. It is the story of Ed Anderson, a man who yields to no one when it comes to grit and determina tion, and dedicated love. Anderson, in his 70s, and his wife, who is 75, lived on a farm outside of Chatfield, Minn. At the height of a se- v e r e blizzard, Anderson’s wife fell down a flight of stairs in their home. She lay there on the floor and Anderson knew he had to go for help. The phone was dead. Outside the wind howled and the snow flew. The nearest neighbor lived a mile away. Anderson put on his coat, got out his crutches — he doesn’t walk wdl without them, and hob bled that mile through the blizzard to his neighbor’s house. When he got there, he found his neighbor’s phone was dead, too. So the neighbor and Anderson warmed up a farm tractor and started out in search of a phone. They stopped several times, but all the phones were out. For seven miles they drove through storm, until they found a phone that worked. And they called an ambu lance in Rochester, 25 miles away. * i. A parade of vehicles set out from Rochester. A tractor came first, pulling a jeep with a snow plow attached to it. Then came the ambulance. It took them two hours to reach the Anderson farm. It took them two more hours to fight their way back to Ro chester with Anderson’s in jured wife. There, at St. Mary’s Hos pital, Mrs. Anderson received treatment and reported favor ably. Anderson himself ap peared no worse for wear. This happened on the eve of their 50th wedding anniversa ry. What an anniversary gift (or a man to give his wife! The redfcon so many mar riages fail today is because husband and wife have not learned to communicate to gether and share together. Shared troubles have a way of binding a husband and ’wife together. It is a vital part of spiritual growth. Love is a priceless ingredi ent which enables a. man to share his troubles with his God. He may reach that time when there is no human being with whom he can share his troubles. If he hasn’t learned it before, he learns then that he can secure help from God. David, as an old man, wrote in the 37th Psalm: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delight- eth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord up- holdeth him with His hand. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread.” And again in the 40th Psalm: “1 waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and establishing my goings. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.” Although the story about Farmer Anderson said noth ing about prayer and seeking the help of God, I am quite sure that a man who loved his wife that much loved his God and sought His help.
