Clinton, S. C., Thursday, June 9, 1966 the amroKr chronicle •i • it s a woman’s By ROSEMARY Psychiatrists arc now docu-. menting what women have al ways knowji — that bachelors are unhappy people. A study by female psychitrist Gene vieve Knupfer and some of her male associates at the Mental Research Instiute in Berkeley, California, shows that single men are more liKe- ly 'to be dissatisfied with their lives as married men. What is more, bachelors are nearly three times as likely to report that they are unhappy thpn the single girls and four times as likely to dislike their- jobs. The researchers, in part, at-' tributed more unhappiness among single men than single women to different family ex periences in childhdbd which may have accounted for their attitudes toward marriage. * * * ■ More than half of the single men, the study reported, thought their parents’ marri age > had not been too happy. Bachelors, more than other adults, were unsure of wheth er their parents had loved them and had resented their parents’ authority over them. Single women, on the other hand, enjoyed the happiest childhood—happier than per sons who married and the men who remained single. The re port concludes that because of the greater freedom of choice men have in the mar riage market it seems as if those who are either unable or Unwilling to get married were psychologically not ad justed to marriage. As for single women, Dr. Knupfer speculates that because many menwant to feel superior to their wives, the wonten with strong, independent personali ties and other gifted traits may be bypassed.
