Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wil lingham and children of Rock Hill, and Rudy McCarthy and [family of Aiken, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. | J. F. McCarthy. John Weathers of Spartan burg, visited Mrs. S. D. Weathers on Friday. He then joined Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Madden of Clinton and Mrs. Clyde Jones of Greenwood for a week-end at Folly Beach. They were guests of W. R. Weathers in Charleston while there. A Saturday call er of Mrs. Weathers also was another son, Landrum Weath ers, of Greenwood. Friends will be interested to know Mrs. Judy Dawkins is improving at her home after returning from the local hos pital last Monday. Visiting the Dawkins on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Amick of Prosperity. Mrs. C. J. Craig spent a week recently in Greenville with Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Craig and Mr. and Mrs. Leon jpraig. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cole, Mrs. Edna Ballard and Libby, and Mrs. Bessie Hamm en joyed Sunday at Ocean Drive Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Poag attended the Cole reunion at Greenwood State Park Sun day. Mrs. Webb enjoyed a few days last week with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Webb, in Camden. GRADUATE OF USC On June 4, Clark Surratt graduated from the Univer sity of South Carolina, Colum bia, with a B. A. degree in journalism. He will return for post-graduate work in the fall. This summer he is em ployed by the Spartanburg Herald in Spartanburg. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Surratt of 212 Sumter Street in Joanna. WITH RESERVES Eddie Davenport left for Hattiesburg, Miss., on Sun day, June 5, for two weeks training with the Army Re serves. Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Davenport, Sr., were accom panied home on Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. Alva Davenport and children of Charlotte, N. C., where they had vacation ed for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Out- ley and Tommy of St. Augus tine, Fla., returned to thejr home on Wednesday after a few days visit with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Motes in the Bonds Cross Roads commun ity and other friends and relatives. Mrs. Alice Davenpbrt and Jeff are on an extended visit with Mr. and Mrs. Dailny Baker and family in Ninety- Six. Mrs. Davenport is re cuperating after spending several days in the local hos pital. Mrs. Ray Surratt and Ka ren, Mrs. Floyd Abrams and Jan attended the graduating exercises at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, on Saturday when the former’s son, Clark, was a member of the graduating class. Culbertson Award Winners Announced An athletic - scholarship award was given again this year to the outstanding senior boy graduating from each of the seven high schools in the county with the highest com bined scholastic average be ginning with the seventh and running through the twelfth grade, and who at the same time took an active part in the sports program of the school. To be eligible the stu-. dent did not necessarily have to excel in any particular sport or sports. This medallion has been giv en by A. B. Culbertson, well known salesman and former educator of Laurens, whose purpose in giving the award is to encourage better scholastic attainment on the part of ath letes. The award was first given in the Laurens High School. However, for the fifth conse cutive year Mr. Culbertson has made the award available through each of the seven high schools of the county. Those receiving the award in their respective high schools this year are: Laur ens High, Steve Thompson; Ford High, James Campbell; Gray Court-Owings High, Ron nie Carroll Hill; Hickory Tav ern High, Neal Knight; Clin ton High, Thomas Gary John son; Sanders High, Ernest Eugene Mills; and Bell Street High, Johnny Brown. It is the hope of the donor that all administrators, teachers and parents will en courage the boys in these high schools to take an active part in this athletic-scholarship program to the end that bet ter academic as well as ath letic wqrk will be accomplish ed in all of the high schools as they compete for this award known as the A.
