C. State Commission of Forestry, Columbia. In a montlhly forest fire summary recently made pub lic by the State Forestry Com- mlssion, Laurens County was shown to have^had 21 forest fires during the month of March, with 412.6 acres burn ed, an average per fire of 19.6. In the period from July 1, 1965 to March 31, 1966, Lau rens County had a total of 55 fofest fires, 562.2 acres burn- ed. The*' t forest fire hazard grew so critical during March of this year that on March 31, Governor Robert E. McNair prohibiiBed the use of any fire on or adjacent to forests, woodlands, hrustilands, and grasslands of the state. This Was the first time a South Carolina governor exercised this authority granted by a 1955 state law. In the first three days of April, some 480 wildfires burned an estimated 70,000 acres. This was more than the 62,026 acres burned by 4,393 wildfires in the previous nine months. Mr. Tiller said in his report ' that losses In recent fires are expected to be greater than fbr any year in the past 11 years.
