We visited the new plant last week with W. H. Craven, Jr., Saluda’s county agent, and found that President s Sam F. Wheeler was away * on business. But R. H. Hol- steir, Jr., one of the directors from Monetta, was on the scene and served as our spokesman. We are pretty proud of the first-year accomplishments,” Holstein said. “We have es tablished a cash market for soybeans. The tanks have a capacity of 70,000 bushels and there are modern loading facilities for leading the rail cars. The mixing of liquid fertilizer is a> new service the associa tion is offering. “Our labor supply is rather short here,” Craven said, “and we think applying the fertilizer as a liquid will be more efficient, especially on some crops.” Craven, the Saluda county agent, and E. W. Siedschlag, Clemson extension marketing specialist, Columbia, gave the farmers technical advice in planning and construction cf the plant. “This is a good example of what farmers can do by working together. We have been able to assemble beans in large enough quantities to be able to ship in the most t conomical manner. ’ ’ Craven serves as secretary for the association. Other officers include Harry S. Bell, vice president, and O. 1. Price. Jr., treasurer. Holstein told us the idea for the facility was aq out growth of a previous coop erative ownership and opera tion of a cotton gin. “We sold stock to farmers Who would pledge their soy bean acreage for marketing jlhrough the plant.” Farmers brought beans here from as far away as Aiken, Edgefield, and Lex ington last fall. - r\v6corjhere CHECK YOL’R CORN SEEDING RATE Orangeburg County Agent J. C. King says some me chanical corn planters are planting only about 65 percent of the seed when the unit is running at seven mjles-per- hour. For this reason some fields are not getting an ade quate plant population. “To get the desired 16,000 to 18,000 stalks per acre, you may need to set your planter at about 02.000 to 21.000.” * King says 10.Q00 to 12,000 plants per acre are not enough on good land where high fer tilizer rates are used.
