Returns to Virginia Alter Visit

Mrs. Russell Dean and chil
dren, Adair, Russ and Kevin, of
Powhatan, Va., returned to their
home the first of the week after
a two weeks visit with her pa
rents, Mr. and Mrs. Prank Phil
lips.
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Murphey
of Buffalo, were last Sunday
guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. G.
Murphy.
On Sunday, Rev. and Mrs.
Olin Martin, Leonard and Juanita
attended a birthday dinner in
Conway honoring the former’s
father, Baker Martin.
Enjoying the all-night singing
in Spartanburg Saturday were
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bragg, Mr.
and Mrs. Marshall Motes, Mrs.
J. H. Wallenzine, Mrs. R. B.
Smith and Michael.
Mr .and Mrs. Bob Thomas,
Jill, Buzzy, and Eddy, Mr. and
Mrs. Charlie Chandler, Mrs.
Jennie Hazel, Tommy and Jerry
visited Mrs. Ray Brewington in
Laurens on Sunday afternoon.

Miss Mary Rogers, along with
around 34 friends, enjoyed a rec
ord hop last Saturday night at
her home on the Whitmire High
way. Her sister, Pat and mother,
Mrs. J. Z. Rogers, assisted in
the entertainment and in serv
ing refreshments.
Mrs. Mary Bagwell returned
on Sunday after an extended
visit with her sister, Mrs. Beat
rice Martin, in Conway.
Mrs. C. J. Craig spent a week
recently in Greenville with Mr.
and Mrs. E. H. Craig and Mr.
and Mrs. Leon Craig. 1
Mr. and Mrs. Holmes Over-
street of Atlanta, Ga., were
week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs.

youth rally of the churches in
the district, in Whitmire last
Monday night. The district pas
tor, Rev. C. W. Barnes, of Lau
rens, was the speaker. Accom
panying the group from Joanna
were Rev. and Mrs. Olin Martin
and Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Sum
mers.

Miss Kathy Salter of the Zip
per Mobile Homes in Clinton,
was in Orangeburg on Tuesday
as a sales representative at the
mobile home showing.

DEAR SALLY—I’m a man
of 57, and have been a widow
er for seven years. I have gone
out with a few women in re
cent years, but was never se
rious about any of them—until
I met Jane a little over a year
ago. Sh»’s 35, a beauiful
blonde, and I fell like a ton of
bricks for her. I took her out
to the best places in town, and
I bought her a number of gifts
—like fur jackets, an emerald
dinner ring, a color TV set,
and things like that—pretty ex
pensive. Naturally, after all
this attention I gave her, I ex
pected her to be in agreement
when I asked her the big ques-
ion last week—but she politely
informed me that I was too old
for her, and “couldn’t we just
go on as friends?’’ This really
floored me, and now I would
like to know if there is any
way I can get back those gifts
I shelled out for her. OLD FO

DEAR OLD GOGY — So far
as I know about all you can do
is to chalk up that money you
spent as an expensive experi
ence. And furthermore, the
kind of woman who would ac
cept the kind of gifts you gave
this one isn’t worth shedding
any tears over. Certainly she’s

“as good friends.”

DEAR SALLY—I’m a girl of
17, a junior in high school,
and for the past four months
I’ve been dating a nice fellow
who is 18 and a senior in our
school. We have gotten along
swell, and I thought he liked
me a lot. But when my birth
day came last week, I found
out differently. All I got from
him was a friendly greeting
card. I thought for sure he
would give me something per
sonal, like a bracelet, or a
necklace, or a compact. His
thoughtlessness has hurt me
deeply and I haven’t been my
self since my birthday. Mom
and Dad claim I’m putting too
much emphasis on material
things, and that .1 should not
have expected a gift from this

woman of 25 who earlier this
year suffered a shattered ro
mance, and I was really shak
en up for quite a long time.
Then I finally met another nice
young man. When we began
to date I told him frankly
about the experience I had
had, and I made him promise
to keep our relationship strict
ly on a friendship basis, that
I wasn’t ready for any more
love. Well, he surely has kept
his promise, and now I'm get
ting tried of all -this . friendship
business. In. other words, I
have fallen for him hard, and
I’m sure he feels the same
way, but doesn’t dare to break
his promise. So how can I
build a fire under him? TOO

DEAR SALLY—Our 24-year-
old son is still unmarried and
living at home with us. We’re
very happy to have him with
us, because he’s a fine boy and
never has siven us any trouble
or worry. There la, however,
one thing that bothers us about
him. Ije has been out of college
and holding down a very fine
position as an architectural en
gineer for two years, but never
during these two years has he
contributed one penny to our
home. We aren’t exactly in
dire need of the money, al
though we just about make
ends meet with our present in
come. So far we havent’ men
tioned anything about his pay
ing board to us. Do you think
it’s right that we should? HIS
PARENTS.
DEAR PARENTS — Indeed
you should! From 20 to 25 per
cent of his salary would not be
too much to pay or all the ser
vice and comforts he has been
getting for free. The paying of
board by working children is
just and right and customary. ,
