Paris, pre sident of the voluntary organiza tion which serves both Green wood and Laurens counties. The reports are being mailed this week to approximately 2,800 in dividuals and businesses. The number of known cases of tuberculosis for 1964 is reported as ITS, with 16 new cases diag nosed and 4 deaths. The increas ing incidence of both acute and other chronic respiratory di seases is pointed out .The report salutes the 567 vol unteers who worked to extend the association’s program for the betterment of community health Association activities are des- scribed under the (blowing func tions: Community Services, Pu blic Health Education, Profes sional Education, Patient Ser vices. Research, and Fund Rais ing. Community services included co-sponsoring the mass X-ray survey in Laurens County when 6,458 films were made. Findings include 1 case of tuberculosis, 17 suspects, and 53 with other pathology. Public health education focus ed on n Symptoms Alsrt to let each person know the danfnrs of two common symptoms: chronic cough and shortness of breath. The educational cam paign stressed that anyone who has either a chronic cough or shortness of breath should con sult his physician since both symptons -are often signs of ser ious respiratory disease. Nearly 1,00 facts pamphlets on respira tory diseases were distributed. These are available to the public through the association office. A film on emphysema was pur chased and is available to or ganizations for program use. Other ways of acquainting the public with respiratory diseases included the use of health post ers, radio spot announcements, and talks by David B. Gregg of Columbia, and Dr. W. W. Pryor of Greenville. In professional education funds were provided for a Greenwood public health nurse to attend the N. C. Institute on TB and RD and for'a Laurens physician to attend the Boston postgraduate course in pulmonary function. Recognizing that the physician holds the key to better health services and that the nurse can be our best health educator, the association tried to enlarge and strengthen cooperative efforts through a Medical Advisory Com mittee and through the distribu tion of scientific publications a^d educational pamphlets. A patient services Committee remembered TB hospital pa tients each month with gifts, cards, and visits. Where no other provisions existed, the associa tion provided drugs, clothes, transportation, and notions for patients. Research to find more effec tive drugs and better diagnostic tools was financed by NTA al location of one per cent of all Christmas Seal funds. Funds for financing associa tion activities were provided by contributions to the Christmas Seal campaign which amounted to $20,286.84, an increase of 3% over the IMS total Responsibilities and opportuni ties for future service were out lined in six area: (1) encourage needed legislation and adequate appropriations for TB eradica tion (2) provide more and bet ter, basic, and postgraduate pul monary education for physicians and nurses. (3) plan for intensi fied caae detection (4) protect children from infection (5) ar range interagency exchange of plans and program on TB eradi cation and (66) evaluate pro gram.
