ThurwUy, Jut S» IWa i If you go as far northwest as possible in South Carolina, you will find yourself in picturesque Oconee County, in the heart of the beautiful Blue Ridge Moun tains. This rapidly developing area boasts scenic beauty, his tory and recreation beyond com pare in our state. The first Inhabitants of what is now Oconee were such Indian tribes as the Cherokees. the Creeks from Mexico, and a clan of Iroquois nicknamed Senecas. The romantic Indian names and legends remain to this day in streams, towns and mountains. Among the most popular ot the legends is the story of Issa- queena, the brave Creek maiden who rode to warn settlers of an oncoming Indian attack. The five incorporated towns of the county, namely Salem, Sen eca, Walhalla, Westminster and West Union, all have their own distinctions, but they^share in common th e exciting mountains, the bubbling streams and the fine recreational attractions. Some of the finest stream and lake fishing in the nation is to be found in Oconee. The most recent major devel opment is a far-sighted plan by a private power company to con struct a multimillion dollar pow er project in the area, which will create two beautiful new recre ational lakes in Oconee and Pick ens Counties. Willing ham and family attended the graduation exrecises at North Greneville Junior College Mon day, May 24. A niece of Rev. Wil lingham was among the gradu ates. Among the members of the Newberry High School graduat ing class Monday night were a number of young people of the community: Mike Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. P. John son; Don Crapps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Crapps; and Marilyn Leopard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Leopard, Sr. Miss Brenda Crapps, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Crapps, received a BS in nurs ing from the University of South Carolina Saturday, May 29. Miss Crapps has acepted work at Bai ley Memorial Hospital. Miss Barbara Pitts spent sev eral days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Shouse, this week. She will leave Sunday for a week at Camp Greenville. Miss Lynn Nabors, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Nabors, was among the music pupils of Mrs. Carson Nabors who were presented in a recital at the Joana Baptist Church on Satur day evening. Mr. and Mrs. Chick Pitts, Jr., and daughter, Barbara, were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Shouse on Tuesday, May 25. The occasion was in honor of Mrs. Pitts’ birthday. • • * The Shady Grove Home Dem is expected to make the economy of the area soar to new heights in industrial and recreational ex pansion. Oconee County is the home of Clemson University, named for scientist-statesman Thomas G, Clemson, son-in-law of South Carolina’s famous citizen, John C. Calhoun, one-time Vice Presi dent of the United States. Started as a humble state agricultural and mechanical college, Clemson is today recognized as one of the South’s finest institutions of high er learning. On the Clemson campus, you’ll see “Fort Hill,” the Calhoun family home, where in 1886, Thomas Clemson donated $80,000 and the homestead to give the school its beginning. Some 72,000 acres of the county lie within the Sumter National Fprest. In addition to providing timber management and pre serving a watershed, the Forest offers fine fishing, hunting and camping facilities. The local sec tion of the Sumter Forest, named for Revolutionary War hero An drew Pickens, contains many of the county’s outstanding points of interest. Six miles from Walhalla, off S. C. Highway 28. is famous Stumphouse Mountain tunnel, bored for more than a mile into the heart of a granite mountain. It was begun in 1856, and then abandoned after the start of the War Between the States. It was within this tunnel that Clemson scientists made blue mold cheese in America for the first time. You’ll want to see Oconee Sta tion, the oldest building in the county, built in 1760 as an outpost to protect settlers from the In dian attacks. It's on County Road 95, two miles north of Picket Post. Over near Westminster, just off U. S. 76, is located the home of immortal Horseshoe Robinson, Revolutionary war hero whose daring exploits against the British are still re called today. Horseshoe was a “homespun” philosopher who became a legend in his own time. One of the most thrilling natur al sights in this gorgeous moun tain section is Whitewater Falls, the highest cascade in the East ern United States. This unmatch ed attraction is ten miles north of Salem, S. C., on the way to Sapphire, North Carolina. There’s much to see and do in Oconee County, and you’ll enjoy every minute of your stay. It’s no wonder that local residents say that “it’s easy to reach . . . but hard to leave.” onstration Club met at the club house Tuesday. This was the last meeting before the state meeting at Winthrop College. All members were urged to at tend the state meeting. Th lesson for the month was presented by project leader, Mrs. N. A. Shouse. The lesson was on “Organizing Family Business.” During the social hour re freshments were served by Mrs. J. O. Hueble.
