’4 Clinton, S. Thursday, May 13, 1965 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE From Eisenhower Herd The above thick, meaty type registered Aberdeen Angus bull was purchased recently by Billy Patterson and C. D. Waldrep of Laurens. The bull came from former President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s herd in Pennsylvania and was purchased at the state Angus sale in Orangeburg. News of Bonds Cross Roads MRS. N. A. SHOVSE Correspondent A number of mothers in the community were honored on Sun day by a get-together of their children at their homes. Among the groups getting together for Sunday dinner were: Mr. and Mrs. Earle Johnson and Frank, Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson and Jimmy, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Johnson and Billy, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnson and children at the home of Mrs. Bessie John son. - Mrs. Joe Locklear and chil dren spent the week-end with Mrs. Locklear's mother, Mrs. Maude Nabors. The children of Mrs. Guy MIL ler visited her on Sunday. Mrs. Joe McQuirt, Mrs. James Nabors, MTs. Howard Stanley honored Miss Sheila Snow with a miscellaneous shower on Satur day evening at the home of Mrs. McQuirt. The living room was decorated with spring flowers. Mrs. McQuirt greeted the guests and each was given a favor in the shape of a heart. Mrs. Stan ley and Mrs. Josie Locklear led the group in a period of enter tainment. MISS SNOW HONORED Refreshments of punch, party cake squares, nuts and mints were served. Miss Snow wa pre sented with a number of lovely gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hender son and Mrs. Texie Johnson were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lowel Henderson on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Shouse and family attended a family outing Sunday at the Joanna pic nic shelter in honor of Mrs. Burley Humphries. The Shady Grove 4-H Club held its regular meeting Tues day, May 11, at 3:45. Follow ing the meeting the group was favored with a hamburger cook- out by their local sponsors, Mrs. Clarence Hunnicutt and Mrs. Carter Wright. Several ladies in the home demonstra tion club assisted by furnish ing drinks and cookies. Mr?.,. George Cobb, Jr., and George Cobb, III, and Catherine Cobb have returned to Atlanta, Ga., after spending last week wiht Mrs. Cobb’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Pitts. Revival services will continue throughout this week at Fair- view Baptist Church. Rev. M. J. Sanders of Lydia, is the visiting minister. He will be the guest speaker on Sunday morning and W. W. ABERCROMBIE Soil Conservationist Conservation practices plan ned do not conserve the soil and water until they are applied to the land. This period of the year is one of the main application periods in soil and water conser vation work. Many farmers in the Laurens District are now ap plying these measures, despite the fact that the recent heavy rains have put them behind with the planting ot crops. R. R. Burns is building ter races this week on about 50 acres of cropland on the former M. B. Leopard farm west of Ora. The Soil Conservation Service sur veyed the terrace lines last wee*, and Burns is using the'District’s motor grader to build the ter races to SS specifications. About three acres of grass waterways are being shaped and planted to take care of the surplus water from terraces and row drainage in this field. These practices are being carried out as a part of the complete soil and water conser vation plan for the farm. ACP cost-sharing payments will be received to help with application cost. Billy DeShields of Lanford also terraced about 40 acres of cropland last week. Cotton was planted on the field immediately after the terraces were built. A’so, W. H. Fleming and Charles Ball of the same section were using the District’* motor grad er in building terraces on their cotton land ahead of planting. • • • Harry McCord of the Bram- lett’s Church section planted 15 acres of Coastal Bermuda on his cattle farm last week. Also, Alvin Clayton, near Warrior Creek Church, planted about sev en acres of this highly produc tive hybrid bermuda gras. In addition to being one of our best summer pasture grasses, Coastal Bermuda is also an ex cellent perennial hay crop that is high in yield, platability and nutritive value. In addition to the above mentioned favorable characteristics of Coastal, it is also one of our best erosion con trol plants. Moss, Negro, of Rt. 1, Callison in Greenwood County, overturned at 10:30 a. m. as it was coming toward Clinton on Highway 72 about six miles northeast of the city. A car, driven by Millard E. Duncan of Whitmire, attempted to pass the truck as the truck started to make a left turn into the premises of Murray Summerville’s store. A collision resulted and the truck overturned. The Duncan car was only slightly damaged, it was stated. The truck was hauling a load of junk. Patrolman Harold Seigler in vestigated.—Photo by Paul Quinton.
