Cancer Crusade
Chairman for S. C.
Tells of Purposes
The Cancer Crusade has a
two-fold purpose, raising funds
and educating the people, the
state Crusade chairman told
persons attending the annual
educational banquet of the
county chapter' of the Ameri
can Cancer Society here recent
ly at Hotel Mary Musgrove.
Maj. Gen. Frank S. Bowen,
(U. S. Army-Retired) of Co
lumbia, said money is needed
for research, clinics, and ser
vices. He said the fact that 1,-
300,000 cured cancer patients
are walking the streets was due
in part to educating the public
by volunteers of the seven dan
ger signals of cancer.
“We have the opportunity to
present our fellow citizens the
troth about cancer. Cancer is
a killer if neglected," he said.
Dr. C. E. Barnes, president
of the county chapter, presided
at the banquet. State'Sen. Wil
liam C. Dobbins introduced the
speaker.
Mrs. Sarah D. DeLoach, coun
ty commander, spoke briefly of
the local work of the chapter.
She said the major portion of
the fund spent in the county
was to provide* transportation
for patients to the eight clinics
in the state. This year 71 coun
ty. patients have received aid
from the chapter.
