Robert P. Hamer Executor Feb. 18, 1966 IF YOU DON’T READ THE CHRONICLE TOT DON’T GET THE NEWS South Carolina and Georgia share a fabulous water-recrea tion-land in Lake Hartwell, one of the largest man-made bodies of water east of the Mississippi. Easy to reach, the dam site is almost equidistant from Atlanta or Columbia, and is Just 19 miles from the thriving city of Ander son. It wasn’t too long ago that con struction of Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River created this “water paradise,” opening up a whole new world of activity for tourist and resident alike. In addition to being on the Savannah, Lake Hartwell ex tends up the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers, sprawling over some 60,- 000 acres of the two states. Resi dents of towns such as Clemson, Seneca, Westminster and Ander son. and Hartwell and Lavooia, Ga., suddenly found that swim ming, fishing, boating and camp ing were practically at. their doorsteps. There are at least a dozen rec reation, camping and picnic sites on the lake's 964 mllss of shore line, and many more are in the planning stages. Public boat launching ramps are abundant and convenient throughout the area. The dam offers an over look with a spectacular view of the dam and lake. Recreation areas are situated on either side of the dam. The dam can be found on U. S. Highway 29, between Anderson and Hartnell. It is well worth your time to visit the dam itself and its massive powerhouse. When you arrive there, you will be 309 miles above the mouth of the Savannah River, 98 miles above Augusta, Ga., and about 67 miles from the Clark Hill Dam downstream. The huge generators produce 68,000 kilowatts each, or an an nual output of 'about 493 million kilowatt hours of electricity. The concrete section of the dam is 1,900 feet long and 204 feet high. With the earthern embankments on either side of the concrete section, the Hartwell Dam is al most 18,000 feet long. After your visit, as you step outside and look at the giant structure, you feel quite insignificant. Among the main purposes of the Hartwell Dam, of course, are to create electric power, to help control flood damage, and to in crease dependable navigation from Augusta to Savanah. Some of the side benefits are Increased industrial development and the wonderful recreation offered by theiake. Something new is happening which will affect Lake Hartwell and its growing recreational District 96 School Lunch Monu Week'of March 14 MONDAY Milk, hot dogs with chili, Mus tard, onions, cole slaw, whipped potatoes, hot dog buns, butter, cookies.
