Beaufort is a pleasant, friend ly city that has taken care to preserve its heritage for visitors to enjoy. A stroll or drive down one of the residential streets is a step into the excitiiig era that saw he founding of the American Republic. The picturesque old community has a unique charac ter of its own. Here you will see homes of pre-colonial times; the famous Beaufort Arsenal; the old St. Helena Church, dating back to before the Revolution; and many other sights that will thrill those who appreciate the history of this fabulous land of ours. Nearby, on the eastern tip of Parris Island, is the Jean Ribaut Monument, commemorating the site of Charles Fort, built by Ri baut in 190 to colony established in North America by the fi esdom an him French Huguenots. Many recall that in 190, the Port Royal- Beaufort citizens celebrated the 400th anniversary of this first settlement here. A national mag azine writer wrote at that time, “the area around Beaufort has more history per square inch than any other part of the U. S. A.” Explorers were sailing the riv ers and waters around the Port Royal peninsula only a short Si years after Columbus discovered the New World. Possibly more unbelievable Is that this was 100 years before the Pilgrims landed In Massachus etts. Written records of this fabu lous period are found in the ar chives of Spain. The written description cannot match an actual visit to Beau fort and Port Royal, so that you may see for yourself some amazing “pages” of American hisory brought to life. Following Ribaut’s settlement in UMB, the Spanish sent an expedition to de stroy Charles Fort in 19M, and later established a military peat at St. Elena. For 21 years, this remained Spain’s northernmost outpost on the Atlantic Coast In 1063, Captain WIIHam wnfr— of the British ship “Adventure” became the first to fly the Bri tish flag over St. Helena Sound. Today, Hilton Head Island is named for this British Captain. By 1090, the Lord Proprietors granted tracts of land around Port Royal. In 1710, it was agreed that a seaport, named Beaufort after the Duke of Beau fort, should be built near Port Royal in what was at that time Granville County. Thus, Beaufort is the second oldest chartered community in South Carolina. The Morris, Pringel and Re treat Plantation houses are the oldest, built during the Indian Wars prior to the American Revolution. These old structures have “tabby” foundations, made of oyster shells and lime and con tain handmade nails and wooden pegs. Just 15 miles from Beau fort on Highway 21, is Sheldon Church, constructed in 1740. It was burned during the Revolu tion, rebuilt and burned again during the Civil War by Sher man’s troops. The historic ruins are all that remain of one of the South’s most beautiful churches. There is more romance and exciting heritage here than can ever be written in several Pal metto Pathways. Laurens—Willie Lee Jennings, tt, of 21 Watts Ave., died late Friday night at a local hospital after several years of declining health and three weeks of illness. A native of Laurens County, son of the late Jim and Jane Davis Jennings, he was a re tired texile worker and a mem ber of the Second Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Minor Jennings; three sons, Starting O. Jennings of Greenville, Earl E. Jennings of Laurens and James O. Jennings of Honea Path; five sisters, Mrs. Paul Wardell of Creamer, N. C. Miss Janie Jennings and Mrs. Lois MaraMe of Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Clara Glover of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Margaret Johnson of Chicago, HI.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conduct ed Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sec ond Baptist Church by Rev. Grange S. Cothran, Rev. J. C. Sorrow and Rev. J. W. Spain. Burial was in Rose Hill Ceme tery.
