R.’s met at the ladies club room and the subject of study was "Women in Public Service.” Mrs. H. D. Henry was in charge of the program and gave a sketch of Frances E. Willard. The hostesses for the occasion were Mesdames Emma Glenn J. M. Pitts, M. A. Hays, D. W. Mason, and Bliss Dorcas Mason. • t • The rural school improvement organization of Laurens County was given a forward step at a meeting yesterday at Trinity Ridge high school whea 22 of the 30 local associations were repre sented by a gathering of JBO women of the county. On Thursday afternoon Mrs. D. M. Douglas was a gracious hostess when she entertained with a "five o’clock tea” in hon or of Mrs. Witmer and Miss Wit- mer, of Brevard, N. C. Young’s spring dub house. W. P. Dickson, leader presided. Among the speakers . was James H. White, county term security supervisor, who talked to the farmers on the importance of soil conservation work and the results obtained on his farm in IhcreasetT production. —♦ ♦ • The senior and junior classes of Mountville high school will sponsor a Halloween carnival Friday evening, October 27, be ginning at eight o’clock. Sanders, special agent of the department of commerce, bureau of the cen sus, 8,332 bales of cotton have been ginned in Laurens county prior to October 1, as compared with 9,170 bales for the 1948 crop. « 19 TEARS AGO The General Election for state and county officers nominated in the June primary will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2. Eichelberger yesterday. « • • A reading room, newly furn ished and decorated, has been opened in conjunction with the Children’s Library on the second floor of the Presbyterian College and city library building. The room which adjoins the or iginal library has been furnished with modernistic heading tables and chairs and is open the regu lar library hours. College Freshmen Elect Gloss Officers Presbyterian College’s fresh man class is under the leader ship of newly elected officers to day following recent campus balloting. Bill Buchheit of Spartanburg and Gregg Underwood of Chatta nooga were chosen as freshman representatives to the student council. They join delegates from other classes to farm the self- goveramg council of the PC 8tu- dent body. Johnny Gay of Laurinburg, N. C., was chosen president of the freshman class in this elec tion.
