The expensive er time, etc. it would have turned and paid us a visit from the opposite dir rection? Dora dumped about 4 inches of rain over our Coastal Plains cotton belt Just as the cotton was beginning to open good. I think most farmers were pleased that it didn’t do quite as much dam age as they first thought. Jimmy Vause, of Salters, in Williamsburg County, was pick ing mechanically about one and one-third bales per acre in his first run over the field last week. It’s hard to get 100 pel cent of the cotton with mechanical pickers. But Jimmy was get ting, according to an estimate by R. A. Jackson, County Agent, about 97 per cent. That’s good. Of Dora, Jimmy said: “My cotton would have yielded about 1 per cent more before Dora." By that he meant that Dora had knocked 1 per cent on the ground where the pickers couldn’t pick it up. At other places more cotton was knocked out. But if esti mates aren't revised downwards as a result of Dora damage, state fanners might ring up the highest per acre yields in the state’s history. • • • FARMS and FOLKS L. G HAMILTON While moot of us have been ■wi’yiiig about the adequacy of air power fas Fist Nam, were using every minute of dfcy- light to fly their missions. McKenzie’s list included 41 crop duster pilots working in the state. He admitted this was not a complete listing of all pilots. By the way, McKenzie said the dusters did a magnificent job of "saving" a good cotton crop for us this year. SCREW WORM REPORT Increases in wounds among livestock and wildlife due to the mating season for deer, and among livestock due to branding and the like, usually is greatest during the fall. ' These wounds and the moist fall weather normally bring the greatest screw worm threat, is one reason you see livestock men cruising their pastures to look over cattle and hogs. Since the big eradication pro gram started several yean ago, screw worms have been as scare as hen’s teeth. Although tens of thousands of cases ware occur ring before 1981, the infestations have now dwindled to only a few. In five mid-westani states, for instance, during August no screw worm attacks were re ported from four of the states. In South Carolina, so far as to known, no cases have occurred this year, according to Carl livestock those Indebted to said estate will please make payment likewise.
