Joanna Moose Club Observes 32nd Year Celebrating their thirty-sec- ong anniversary of continuous organization, the Joanna Moose Club entertained their wives and guests at a special event recently, at which one hundred and fifty members and guests were present Entertainment was furnished by the Newberry College band. The Joanna Lodge, No. 1906, is the oldest active Moose Lodge in the state. It was or ganised in May of 1192, with fifty charter members, and the late W. W. Hair served as the first governor. There are 89 registered members on the current roll, and Rudolph Prater is govern or. Their weekly mating night is Thursday and the attend ance is practically 100 per cent of the membership Their chief national promts are the sup port of Moose he art in Chica- Donnie Wilder Receives Award Donnie (Rip) Wilder of the Shelby Daily Star in Shelby, N. C., has been declared winner of the annual William T. Polk Busi ness writing contest sponsored by the Piedmont Associated In dustries. The state award was presented at a dinner of the PIA held in the Embassy Club in Greensboro, N. C., recently for newspaper men. A check and placque were pre sented Mr Wilder, and the Daily Star also received a duplicate placque. Mr. Wilder, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. DELANT Southern Textile Association Names Delany For Honor The Southern Textile Associa tion will convey its highest In dividual honor next month on J. L. Delaney, general superin tendent of Joanna Cotton Mills Co.. Joanna, S. C. Mr. Delany, a past president of STA, has been named third recipient of the association’s Da vid Clark Award for “outstand ing service to the textile indus try.” The award, named after the association’s founder, recog nizes past presidents of the or ganization who continue beyond their terms in office to serve the textile industry by promot ing the free exchange of tech nical information, and by pro moting good fellowship among operating executives of the in dustry. A native of Lowell, Mass., Mr. Delany Joined Joanna Cotton Mills Co. in 1929 as a member of the firm’s quality control staff. He was named assistant superintendent in 1998, and since 1944 has served as general super intendent. In addition to serving as STA president in 1961-52, Mr. Delany has held vertually every asso ciation office available to him. He has served as chairman of its South Carolina Division, as a member of its board of gov ernors, and as second then first vice-president. Currently he is an ex officio member of the board of governors, and a mem ber of the executive committee of the South Carolina Division. A past president of the Clin ton Kiwanis Club, he is a vice- president of the Joanna Com munity Corp. and a trustee of the Joanna Foundation. His wife it the former Lena King of Bel ton. They have two daughters— Mrs. Kit Booher of Groton, Conn., and Patrice (“Dishie”, of the home. The latter was saluta- torian for this year’s graduating class at Clinton High School. She plans to enroll at Duke Univer sity in the Fall. Widely known In the textile industry, Mr. Delany is a fre quent contributor to the techni cal press, and has appeared as lecturer before many of the tex tile industry’s leading technical groups. ' The Southern Textile Associa tion, with headquarters in Char lotte, is an organization of tex tile operating executives of the Carolinas and Virginia. The group, whose 1300 members rep resent the major spin/weave mills in the area it serves, will hold its fifty-sixth annual meet ing June 11-19 at the Jack Tar Grove Park Inn at Asheville The award to Mr. Delany will be presented at the convention’s opening business session on Fri day, June 12. • CLINTON AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL The home schedule for the 1964 season follows: June 8—Laurens. Recreation News Play began Mondky in the city boys baseball league, which is under the auspices of the Clin ton Recreation Commission, and will continue through August 7. The schedule is for all three leagues, Small Fry, Intermedi ate and Junior. In the Junior League, Whitmire replaces the Hampton Independents. The teams are: Hampton Lions, Bailey Moose, Thornwell Kiwanis, Lydia Exchange, Hampton Independents, Joanna, and Whitmire. The schedule for the coming week will be published in The Chronicle and will run from Thursday through Wednesday. Games in the three leagues played this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were: Hampton Lions vs. Lydia Ex change, Bailey Moose vs. Hamp ton Independent, Thornwell Ki wanis vs. Joanna.
