Woodruff Is Vidor
Over Clinton, 18-13
By TOMMY DAVIS •
Woodruff needed a last-minute
punt return for a score to turn
back Clinton’s Red Devils, 18-13,
last Friday night in Wilder Sta
dium.
No scoring took place in the
first quarter; however, a pass
interception in the initial quar
ter led to Woodruff’s first score
Clinton’s final game of the
season, added after the orig
inal schedule was made up,
will take place Friday night
with Parker JHigh School of
Greenville furnishing the oppo
sition. The game will be played
on the Parker field, and kick
off time is 7:30.
in the second quarter. Charles
Hembree, end, took a pass from
quarterback Dennis Varner and
scored from 16 yards out. The
PAT failed.
Another Wolverine score took
place after a Clinton miscue. A
fumble recovery on the Red Devil
22 resulted in a Woodruff touch
down, with Hembree again scor-
in,g this time on a 3-yard run
The extra point failed again.
Clinton’s deepest penetration of
the first arose when Elbert Rice
recovered a fumble on the Wood
ruff 46. Jack McKittrick, Ken
neth Cathey and Joel Whitsel
shared the running roles which
enabled Clinton to get to the 23.
They were held there.
Following a punt in the third
period, Clinton marched to the
Woodruff 4, where fullback Bob
by Haskins plunged fnr Athe
score. The PAT was no good.
The longest plays in this drive
was a 23-yard run by Haskins
and a 15-yard pass from Whit
sel to end Phil Rogers.
The Red Devils started a 64-
yard march midway of the last
quarter and scored with McKit
trick’s taking a screen pass from
Whitsel and racing for 35 yards.
Rogers converted the point after
touchdown.
Clinton got possession again
but was forced to punt. Hembree
took it on his own 40, shook off
would-be ladders and scored
from there. The PAT attempt
afiled.
Marion Freeman was a main
stay on defense and played out
standing football.
This loss brings Clinton’s over
all record to 4-7, with Parker re
maining on their schedule. Kick
off time is 7:30 in Greenville.
