C, Thursday, October SI, IMS THE CLINTON CHRONICLE 4- Clinton Dumps Winnsboro In Third Straight Victory By Tommy Dario Th* Clinton High Rrhfwi Devils won their third consecu tive game Friday night as they dumped conference foe Winns boro, 6-0. The contest was play ed at Winnsboro. The Wildcats, led by halfback Robert Hackle, marched down to Red Clinton's S3 at the beginning of the first quarter. Howevir, an intercepted pass^by Joel Whitsel nullified any threat of a score for the ’Cats. Clinton also had a good drive nullified in the first quarter as Bobby Haskins fum bled at the Winnsboro 28. In the second quarter, Phil Rogers intercepted a Renwick pass and returned it to the 86 of Clinton. Whitsel passed to Joe Fuller for seven yards. Whitsel ran for 20 yards, mid Jack Mc- Klttrtck ripped off 31 big yards until a 15-yard penalty pushed the Reds back to the 23. Then Whitsel faded back to pass, but was pulled down by an opponent at the 30. This ended the first half. Winnsbroo never threatened in the third quarter as they didn’t enter Clinton’s territory. Clin ton, however drove 30 yards from their own 30 to Winnsboro’s 25, Harrell Hampton moving for four yards, McKtttrick for one, and WhiUel hitting Hampton for a 34-yard pass play, which car ried to the ’Cat 85. This, was the last {day of the third quarter. <* On the first play of the fourth quarter, Jim McMillan picked off a Whitsel pass and returned it from the end zone to the nine. The Wildcats were forced to punt after running off five plays, how- veer. Clinton took the punt and marched to the 28 of Winnsboro but the driev was ended'what Jim Carter intercepted another Whitsel pass. They were again forced to punt. This was Clin ton’s break. The Red Devils took possession on their own 14. On the first play, Whitsel took to the air and threw a screen pass to McKit- trick, who, behind beautiful blocking, scampered for 62 yards to the Winnsboro 24. On the first play from there, McKit- trick was stopped at-the middle. Whitsel then tried to turn the corner, but was felled for a two- yard loss. Whitsel then found Rogers at the five with a beau tiful pass play. McKittrick ran to the two, and on the next play, Bobby Haskins bulled his way into the end zone. The PAT run failed as Whitsel was stopped short of the goal. This left 25 second remaining in the game. Clinton kicked off and the ’Cats moved to the Clinton 45 before Johnny Willingham intercepted h pass to end the game. The victory put the Red Devils in third place in the Eastern AA Conference behind Chester and Woodruff. Clinton has a confer ence record of 2-1, and an over all record of 3-5.
