EVERYDAY COUNSELOR »7 Bkkq Patronize The Nervousness, frustration, and depression seem to be the birth- I marks of modern man. Even I the churches which proclaim the [gospel of the Prince of Peace [have in their membership many [who are so marked. A recent survey reports that 80 per cent of the average Protest^ ant congregation are suffering from some form of nervous or emotional maladjustment. When you add to this the fact that from 50 to 75 per cent of all illnesses in this country are psychosomatic, we have a distressing picture of I modern life. We act as if God has gone out j of business. We need to take an I honest look at ourselves and then Ido some honest Bible reading. Even the casual reading of the Book of Psalms indicates that the 1 writers were dealing with the [same problem—the warfare of (the emotions. The psalmist de- I scribes man suffering from emo tional illness. He is persecuted by the enemies which attack his (inner life. The 57th Psalm opens with a [cry for mercy, followed by the affirmation, “In the shadow of [thy wings will I make my refuge, (until these calamities be over- Ipast.” In verse three, the psalm- |ist speaks of “the reproach of |him that would swallow me up.” The metaphor changes and we (read, “My soul is among lions: land I lie even among them that (are set on fire, even the sons of I men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp (sword . . .” Through all of his trials, the (psalmist says, “My heart is fix- led, O God, my heart is fixed: I [will sing and give praise.” The same pitcure appears in (many of the other psalms. Psalm |40 reads, “I waited patiently for ■the Lord; and He inclined unto [me, and heard my cry. He (brought me up also out of a hor- Irible pit, out of the miry clay, land set my feet upon a rock, and I established my goings. And He [hath put a new song in my (mouth, even praise unto our God: (many shall see it, and fear, [shall trust in the Lord. Blessed (is that man that maketh the Lord I his rtust, and respeceth not the (proud, nor such as urn aside to (lies.” In Psalm 27, we have a good [picture of the sufferer from stom- |ach ulcers, “When the wicked, (even mine enemies and my foes, [came upon me to eat up my (flesh, they stumbled and fell.” [Why did the enemy stumble? Be- e, “The Lord is my light and (my salvation ... The Lord Is the (strength of my life.” The answer to all the calam* | ities described by the jg (always the same—partnership [with God. Many of you who read this col- Jumn are beset with worries and [frustrations now. Gat down your [Bible and open it to the Psalms, [take your pencil and marie the Don’t miss the 37th [Psalm. Help is spelled out in de- (tail. By all means mark the 18th [Psalm: “The Lord is my rock fortress . . . deliverer . . . (strength . . . buckler . . . horn [of salvation . . . high tower . . . [For by thee I have run through a (troop; and by my God have 1 (leaped over a walL” COME GREATESTVALUE-PACKED WESTERN A-GOIN yoiRSi'-l During Our...
