SENSING THE NEWS By Thurman Sensing Executive Vice-Presideat Seuthera States ladastrlal Csencfl THE ULTIMATE IN ‘NO-WIN’ From the 1820s to the 1960s, it was American policy to bar for eign powers from this hemis phere. This policy, embodied in the Monroe Doctrine, was a cor nerstone of U. S. foreign rela tions. Indeed it was one of the fundamental principles of the Republic that no European state could bully its way into the Ca ribbean. Since President Kennedy took office, however, the Monroe Doc- trine has been brutally murder ed—and the administration has been an accomplice to the mur der Whats’ worse, not only has the New Frontier allowed Russia to take over Cuba and turn it into a Soviet satellite but it has decided to give protection to the Russians in Cuba. In recent weeks, the New Fron tiersmen have been devoting their best energies not to aiding anti communist Cubans but to track ing them down whenever they attempt to strike a blow for free dom in their homeland. Ameri can ships and planes have been deployed in the Caribbean, not to repel the Soviets, who have arrogantly moved into this hem isphere, but to capture and neu- GRADS OF 1963 Graduation and the many activi ties associated with it makes a happy time. The average father would say “No” to his child requesting a knife. By like token, our loving heavenly Father would say “No” to a request He knows will be dis- astrious. Perhaps God says “Walt" to your prayer. So many of us are like children who want a piece of candy even though a full meal is awaiting. What a weak and spineless race of men we would be if our every wish were grant ed, and our every problem solved immediately. We have only to look at a pampered child to see the results of that course of ac tion. God wants us to love Him as a ' gracious Heavenly Father, to realize His power and wisdom. To know Him and to'love Him is the greatest gift He can grant. There’s another reason why our prayers are not always answered as we wish. It is because we have not done our part. God helps those who try to help themselves. He will not solve it when the means of solving it are right at your hand. It is not generally Gods’ way to grant health with out our first using every means which He put on earth for the benefit of health: the physician, the pharmacist, the counselor, the minister. I read a story of an eccentric fisherman who took a young man rowing. On one of the oars was written the word, “Pray,” and on the other the word, “Work.” “What does anyone want with prayer if he works?” queried the young man. The old man did not answer. Instead he stopped raw ing with the oar marked “Pray,” and pulled only the other. They stopped going forward and com menced to go around in a circle. “Do you see now?” questioned the old man. Prayer and work are the two instruments by which we move forward and upwards in life into the fuller life beyond. It is an incredible perform ance that the American people have been witnessing. The ad ministration is using the agen cies of this country to rpotect the Russians. We announce to the world that we deplore free Cu ban attacks on Russian ships in Cuban harbors. The New Frontier ignores the fact that the Russians are our deadly ene mies, that they have no right to be in Cuba, and that the Cuban government is an illegal body that cruelly represses the Cuban people. Haven't the anti-communist Cubans the right to fight for the freetym of their country? Not according to the New Frontier In the older America, people lov ed liberty. The U. S. government did what it could to assist brave people who wanted to be free of tyrannical government. The United States would never have come into existence had the French government in the 1770s and 1780s adopted an attitude to ward the rebellious colonies such as the Kennedy administration has adopted toward the free Cu bans. The French government of that time could have said, as the Kennedy administration says to day, that rendering assistance to the Americans would result in too great risks. But the French monarch of that day had more courage than the New Frontiers men of 1963. When the New Frontiersmen give the order to capture free Cuban motorboats operating out of Florida, it is worthwhile re membering that the French gov ernment in the 18th century out- fittde John Paul Jones’ ships in a French harbor. But Mr. Kennedy has no intention of al lowing any Cuban John Paul Jones to display their courage. The Kennedy administration attempts to excuse its moral weakness and irresolution by saying that hit-and-nm attacks, if they are made, should be un der American direction—-that we can’t allow Cuban refugees to in volve us in a war threat. Bqt the Kennedy administration has had no compunction about let ting the United Nations in effect make foreign policy for the Unit ed States. The U. S. supplied money, arms and aircraft for the U. N. intervention in Katanga, an act of war over which we in the USA had no direct control and from which we stood to gain only injury to our interests. As for the attacks being inef fective, since when has ineffec tiveness troubled the New Fron- tier? The administration is spending billions of dollars on foreign aid without any effective results for the USA. Within re cent months, the Kennedy ad ministration has poured millions of dollars into Brazil. Each day’s headlines tell of further com munist gains in that country. In Southeast Asia, American sol diers are being killed in an unde clared war that is not notable for improving the U. S. position in that part of the globe.
